Perhaps a weighted system of a nominal fee that goes to a club - so the bigger the club taking advantage, the more they have to pay for an out of contract player.

So if a powerhouse like Real Madrid take Trent, they pay for example a fee of £5m, but it Wrexham did it, they'd pay £500,000.

I like the idea but it would never happen. The whole point of being able to move once a contract is up is about freedom of movement and association. TBH, it's hard to think of how the pre-Bosman era was ever justifiable in hindsight.

I mean, I wouldn't expect my future employer to have to pay my previous employer any kind of fee once I have essentially left them (or even at all tbf). I'd be totally ****ed if that was the case

At the same time, we only need to give two weeks notice if we're contracted to a company. No transfer fee required.

Finding the situation with Diaz at the moment interesting, he has 2 years left on his contract and we seemingly aren't offering a new one, but are insisting he isn't for sale (at the prices being offered). It feels like we are trying to get better offers before selling him, otherwise we need to offer a new contract

Or they are looking at his age and peak years for your normal level attacking player. Diaz isn’t realistically going to get any better than he is now is he. So giving him a new contract on bigger wages isn’t a smart decision. They’ve shown they are happy to let older players leave on a free when their peak years are done. This is another area where the data is very useful.

It really is a strong position for the club. Keep him for two years at the most and let him go for free. You’ve got Gakpo who’s hitting his peak and has more to offer and then you bring in a younger player.

Or sell if you get the right offer which is clearly a massive amount t of money. We could even sell next season for a decent amount and then we don’t have as many changes this season and may have a target in mind.

He can cover multiple roles, is happy and offers us plenty. Don’t forget this guy has been working on a move to Spain and Barca so it’s not like the club are being horrible to him. Things go both ways. Players run down deals, agitate for moves so why can’t the club be a bit ruthless and say we will keep you as you’re a good player and not offer a new deal just to be nice. We had that previously and it didn’t work out.

And he’s not on low wages as has been debunked by plenty of realisable journalists and another one has done it today.

I don’t think it would be smart to sell without a centre forward lined up.

It’s fine to let players leave for free if the opportunity cost of selling is a significant difference to whether the title could be won. Much better to for example even sell him for 30 mil with a year left if he scores another 20 goals this coming season vs sell him now for 70-80 mil because a 20 goal player his age costs at least 50 mil nowadays

In the past LFC didn’t have the financial situation they do now to turn down big fees but things have changed now. If the club stays as successful as they have been since klopp arrived, then they can do that.

Also mad to think it’s already been 9 relatively successful years since then.

If you look at the two left sided players one just turned 26 the other will be 29 in January.

If you’re going to invest in one with a new bigger deal it’s Gakpo. I’d say he’s a better player already and looked great this season and the injury came at a terrible time as he was flying.

If you can get a big fee for Diaz take it and bring in a younger player otherwise keep him as he’s a good player and use the money for other areas and look to the future on the left in a year or two.

Plenty of options here. Either Rio will be good enough to be that player or we find a talented younger player to develop for a decent price to back up Gakpo or a top player becomes available and he’d improve on Gakpo.

When both Gakpo and Diaz played last season Gakpo was always the one playing from the left, suggests to me that he is the preferred option down that side, yes you could argue perhaps Diaz is more suited to playing centrally, but their numbers were more or less the same despite Diaz having the more central role most of the time. For me it suggests Diaz is 2nd choice or a squad player particularly if we sign a CF. While I am not playing down his contribution last season , I would be amazed if we were willing to turn down £75m for him should such an offer come.

Diaz works harder than Gakpo, and is good at advancing play with his dribiling. Gakpo is a different kind of player. I think his end product is better but doesnt have Diaz' work ethic, chasing down fullbacks the length of the pitch.

I dont think Diaz is going to improve much though, and Wirtz may be the focus bringing the ball forward. Diaz is also more eye catching for fetching a premium fee.

If he goes he goes... if he stays then great.

If you can get a big fee for him and bring in a younger player to develop and challenge Gakpo you’d probably take it. Plan for the future and don’t leave it too late.

We’ve also seen in recent years the drop that can happen when players hit a certain age. Apart from the elite levels of VVD and Salah you just have to look at Henderson, Mane, Bobby, Gini. You can add in Robertson now. The club will learn and if they aren’t top level I think we’ll see more future planning and players moving on at a certain age.

And I know it’s not a one size fits all approach and they will use other methods to analyse players plus the way football is nowadays if you want to stay on top you need to keep the squad refreshed and young. Even city felt that last season. I know Slot has a less intense system but it’s an area I think we’ll look to manage now.

There id defo a price where we will be interested in getting, too many noises from his camp not to think that and obv some encouragement from his camp to see Barca and Munich get involved - I also think there is Saudi interest which is what we are hoping for. I can see him moving on this summer.

I think it a case that we want Gordon and the buying club for Diaz pays for Gordon.

Having two players capable of doing so makes us harder to defend against though. But I agree if the right fee is achieved he’ll probably leave.

All fair points but assuming the club signs a centre forward is a significant assumption.

I think it’s maybe more likely, they don’t sign a CF unless the price is right for someone like ekitike and in that scenario, slot probably keeps Diaz as he is proven and he’s versatile.

I think whatever happens Nunez is likely off.
