I thought he had a good game and contributed throughout. They struggled to deal with him and I think he did everything well bar score a goal. A decent 7.5 out of 10 to my mind.

He worked really hard, sometimes to the point he was too exhausted to get into the right positions for a number 9, as mentioned above. A lot of passes forward were poor (over hit) so couldn't make use of his pace properly. He had one good shot at a difficult angle in which he made the goalie work. So, an OK / acceptable performance. One tit for another.

Interesting thing to hear I have never seen anyone do this type of xG analysis on the chance and then the choice of shot taken and I don't really know how the GK position etc is taken into account. At first look it feels like a criticism of Nunez, in saying that his choice of shot reduces is chances of scoring, i.e. he makes bad decisions in good positions.Originally posted by badpiggy View PostOn The Second Captain's podcast, they were saying that the XG for Darwin's second goal was 0.64 but that the stat for the shot he took to score (I forget the technical stat term) was something like 0.24. So if I'm understanding this correctly, this type of chance results in a goal 60% of the time but Darwin's "choice" of finish for this type of chance would only result in a one quarter conversion rate.
Like I say I don't know the ins an outs of how the xG is calculated but I could imagine faced with a choice of a shot going across goal or for near post a chance across goal gives you a larger area of goal to aim at so presumably a higher xG but also that is probably what the GK expects so is that tempered somewhat? And by going near post and catching the GK off guard if you get the shot into a smaller area you have a better chance of scoring with a harder chance? My suspicion is that someone like Salah wouldn't be criticised for something like this whereas Nunez would and this comes down to the number of goals they get. But not sure whether this is a cause of Nunez' lack of goals without more information. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Well it definitely was meant as a criticism of Nunez - he reduced a 60% scoring chance to a quarter through his shot choice. It's probably a bit like that lob he did last year - can't remember against who - but I think the criticism again was that it wasn't a natural finisher's option, however cool it looked. As for how xG etc is calculated, I'll tap out at that point.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostInteresting thing to hear I have never seen anyone do this type of xG analysis on the chance and then the choice of shot taken and I don't really know how the GK position etc is taken into account. Yeah I immediately went to that chip finish he did last season that was criticised by Michael Owen amongst othersOriginally posted by badpiggy View PostWell it definitely was meant as a criticism of Nunez - he reduced a 60% scoring chance to a quarter through his shot choice. If you dig around on fbref and a few of the other stat sites you can play around with the conversion stats for different types of shots and also just do conversion numbers vs shots per game and also vs shots on target per game.
Was looking at Duran at Villa the other day and he is like a machine when it comes to conversion rates. He gets four shots and he gets a goal. But of his shots on target he only needs two per goal. And he just keeps those rates going despite also having very high numbers for defending and tracking back.
Think his per minutes number for goals is something like a goal for every 85 minutes of game time he gets. Think last season he was a goal every 95 mins or so.
Hell of a back up striker is what he is at present. Only 21 as well.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
