That's only because no other home nation has a county playing 1st class cricket. It really should be better named, but politics always gets in the way.Originally posted by Mumsafan View PostThe England and Wales Cricket Board.
You can be born anywhere in the British Isles and play for "England", selected by a committee of the EWCB, it's about time they grew up and got with the programme.

The truth is that for years England have treated one day cricket as very much the poor relation of test cricket. it has long been seen as a neccessary evil, to generate cash to keep the county scene & therefore English test cricket alive. Our test players are constantly rested when one day series come along. In some ways I don't disagree with that policy. Under Fletcher England have gone from 7th best in the world to 2nd best in the test rankings. This has been achieved in part by sacrificing the one day game. Englands test team was in such a state that the game was in real danger of becoming really marginalised. I love cricket as much as footy but even I could hardly bring myself to watch another Ashes hammering. fletcher changed all that. we began to compete with all but Australia then finally in 2005 took the Aussies on and beat them. The price of this has been our 1 day demise. All other countries treat one day cricket on a par with test cricket. England haven't.
However, now is the time for that to change. Vaughan should stand down as 1 day skipper but should stay on as test skipper. Having two skippers is far from ideal but we can't discard Vaughan from the test arena. fletcher should be made Chaiman of selectors instead of Graveney. Fletcher can spot a players potential. Look at Trescothick, Strauss & Vaughan himself, all picked from county cricket obscurity. Flintoff' & Harmison were turned from raw talent into world class performers. I'd have Strauss as 1 day captain and Tom Moody as coach.
however, above all the 1 day game must be treated as an equal to test cricket. Harmison must be made to return to the one day game and Trescothick must be given every chance to re enter the scene. there's much to be done but we must start now to build for the next world cup.AKA Heighway No9

Why not go all the way and have a 5 day Coach and a 1 day Coach?Originally posted by Sir Bob View PostThe truth is that for years England have treated one day cricket as very much the poor relation of test cricket. it has long been seen as a neccessary evil, to generate cash to keep the county scene & therefore English test cricket alive. The games are two totally different games to be honest and need different tactics. Some players can adapt to it, some cant.
One day cricket has improved 5 day cricket in many ways - Better Fielding, Faster Run Rates and Less Drawn Tests.
BUT
In many ways it has destroyed 5 Day Cricket. IMO Bowling has suffered most of all. Very few Bowlers these days have the ability to bowl a side out. It's more a case of Batsmen giving their wickets away than Bowlers beating them. Very few Batsmen have the ability to play a real Long innings these days. It's too often a quck fire 40-50 and then out through a stupid shot. Quite often one innings of 100 runs ends up the difference between sides.
And now with 20/20 becoming more popular, I fear that these changes will become even more apparent.
Why dont Rugby Union, Rugby League and Rugby Sevens share the same coaches etc. It's because they realise that although the equipment is the same, The Games are Totally different. Same should apply to Cricket"For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son"

I think 2 sepearate coaches would be a good idea. Also they need to realise that there are actually some test players who are absolute ****e at one day stuff and vice versa. They do make the odd change but , like most sports in this country, the big names tend to be picked for everything whether good enough or not.Originally posted by SouthAfricaRed View PostWhy not go all the way and have a 5 day Coach and a 1 day Coach?
