    Rugby

Apologies for the new thread on this, but I have to say I dont get it at all.

Only found out a few years ago you cant throw the ball forward - what the **** is that about? :whatever:

As for this 6 Nations bollocks - what's all this **** about the grand slam, triple crown, Calcutta Cup? what the **** is all that ****? Makes no sense whatsoever - why cant you just have one trophy for the winner and that's it?

Calcutta Cup is won by winner of 6 nations match between Scotland and England

Triple Crown is won by the team out of Wales, Ireland, England, and Scotland that manages to beat the three other teams in the 6 nations

Grand Slam in won by a 6 nations team that beats all their opponents

Interesting. And they have trophies for all three? And all three trophies could be won by the same team, by different teams (with the exception of the Grand Slam) or by none?

Seems a bit excessive - there's 4 trophies up for grabs in a 6 team tournament.

Well only England and Scotland can win them all as only they compete in the Calcutta Cup. Whichever team loses it cannot win any other of the competitions mentioned as they all require you to win every game involved - although they can still win the six nations outright by coming top of the table. Don't forget for the same reason the Grand Slam and Triple Crown will not necessarily be won each time.

A bit pointless having so many trophies up for grabs though isnt it?

I guess the reason for so many trophies goes back to how it evolved.
Originally called the Home Nations where Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales were involved. The winner of all 3 of the games won the Triple Crown.
Then the Five Nations, where France joined in. The winnder of all 4 games won the Grand Slam.
Then the Six Nations, where Italy joined in. The winnder of all 5 games won the Grand Slam.
If the Grand Slam isn't won the team with most points wins the Championship.

The Wooden Spoon goes to the team finishing bottom. Take your pick from Wales and Scotland this time out
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

Is there literally a Wooden spoon? Or is it the metaphorical kind?

Metaphorical. But I've been to games where the opposing fans wave wooden spoons to "winners".
I think it might be masonic

There is no actual wooden spoon given, no, that really would be embarrassing
