Is Murali the greatest test bowler ever?

Yep, Gillespie took well over 200 wickets in the same era too. Was a very good bowler until Vaughan destoyed him in the 05 series. I used to love watching Warnie and McGrath bowl in tandem. There was no respite.Originally posted by looprevil View PostExactly. Australia had a strong bowling line up throughout his time, so for Warne to take those wickets with the quality in his team makes it more of an incredible achievement."I watched the Champions League quarter-finals and the way they crushed Arsenal. Only the greatest and the best can play such a match.

Muralitharan has taken a lot of his wickets against teams like Bangladesh, on sub-continent pitches which are prepared perfectly for him.
Warne is just that extra bit special IMO, he took wickets eveywhere regardless, he could spin a ball on water, that's how good he is. He had the ability to change tests, not that Murali doesn't, but when his team was struggling Warne always came through.
Warne is the greatest test bowler ever IMO.
Although, since i am only 17 i haven't seen a lot of the other top wicket takers like Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh etc.
If you take Murali's achievements against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe out of the equation, his record is STILL better than Warne's.
Warne is a genuine all-time great but Murali's record is markedly better. Stats don't lie - although the Aussies may not like it - Murali is the greatest. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

That’s probably about right.Originally posted by looprevil View PostHe is the greatest wicket taker, but is he the greatest test bowler?
If I needed someone to take a wicket to save my life, I’d choose Murali – but if someone asks me who the greatest bowler ever is, I’d be naturally inclined to reply Warne.

Warne was a better bat and had a better cricketing brain too. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I think if you put stats aside ( due to complaints about his action, playing on prepared pitches in the sub-continent, etc), and think about who did the most for the game, stood out in their time, who people recognise, etc, it has to be Warne. He changed the way spin bowling was perceived. He broke teams hearts, and not crap teams either , and not just on his home turf. No doubts who people will remember in years to come.
Think about it - Gary Lineker was a more prolific goalscorer than Kenny Dalglish, but who was the better player?"Every time i sit around i find i'm shot."

My Aussie mate made a great point, echoing what carlton said in this thread.
It wasn’t easy for Warne to take, say, seven wickets, when you consider McGrath et al had usually ripped through the opposition before Warne even got a bowl. To take that many wickets in a side full of great bowlers was a hell of an achievement.
Still…it’s funny to see Aussies flapping about with excuses and saying “**** the record books” when they clearly show Murali to be superior.

Of course Murali is better. Cricinfo had a piece yesterday where it compared the averages and strike rates excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh which bitter Aussies always moan about. Murali's stats were better against all nations other than Pakistan.
People say that Murali's wickets came against inferior opposition - but Warne took most of his against England. And as we all sadly know few English players can play spin...
Add the fact that Warne always had better team mates bowling the other end building pressure, it made it easier for him to take wickets. That flip side of that is Murali takes most of SL wickets. Again you could argue that Warne never had to bowl agianst the best team of all, Australia, so his stats are enhanced by this.
Steve Waugh/Alec Stewart/Donald Bradman all say Murali's action is fine. Only bitter Aussies with nothing better to do tend to disgaree...

Well argued - made me think, but I stick by Warne.
