Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Im with Shaggy on the debate front. Its pretty ordinary and it cheapens the game IMO.

I'm enjoying the IPL - we get good coverage of it here and I've been able to watch most of the games
I love cricket and still prefer the 5 day tests, but the 20/20 format is different and if it can help in the growth of Cricket, then it's ok. Hopefully some of the new people attracted by this form of cricket will learn to understand the game and start following the real game, which is the 5 day game"For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son"

I haven't really bothered to watch much of it here (Australia), mainly due to the fact that, like Shaggy, it doesn't real hold any interest for me, the teams are arbitrary and meaningless (even to those Indians who have a local team to support as it's not like they contributed to the team or its history).
Also, the best cricket to me is the tight, tense encounters, especially tests, because cricket is a sport about concentration, determination and mental strength, none of which really play any part in the IPL, which is just a glorified exhibition match. Just because it's been high scoring, with lots of sixes as well as lots of wickets doesn't mean it's been an engaging contest as the conditions and format of Twenty20 are conducive to that aggressive style. It's like taking goalkeepers out of a game of football and then marveling at how many goals are scored.
I for one hope Twenty20 isn't the future of the game, although I have a bad feeling that because India holds such an influence in world cricket due to money and spectators that the IPL is the kind of thing we'll be seeing a lot more of.

I think 20/20 will definately replace the 50 over game. It will also influence the 5 day game as batsmen and fielding will improve even more, but bowling will deteriorate. It is already more attractive to be a batsmen hitting sixes whilst nobody wants to be the poor bowler going for 10 runs a overOriginally posted by Trippendicular View PostI haven't really bothered to watch much of it here (Australia), mainly due to the fact that, like Shaggy, it doesn't real hold any interest for me, the teams are arbitrary and meaningless (even to those Indians who have a local team to support as it's not like they contributed to the team or its history).

Watched a cracking game today between Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Gilchrist was in frightening form with the bat - he hit a century off 48 odd balls and led Hyderabad to a 10 wicket win. Thoroughly enjoyed the games so far.
