It was very, very, very, very, very close, but YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Calzaghe is a legend. I'm proud to be from the same country as him.

That fight was absoloute rubbish. Hopkins didn't want to box, he knew he'd get hammered. Fair enough, clever tactics but he ruined the fight as a spectacle.

No wonder they were struggling with selling the tickets. Who the hell would want to watch Hopkins fight?

I'm just glad that attacking boxing was rewarded, because the referee had a shocker. Handled this bout in the opposite way to the way he handled the Hatton fight, and made a pgs ear of both. Funnily enough this worked in the Yank fighters favour yet again.

But Super Joe still came through. And like he said himself, it's the result, not the performance that counts.
          Forwards.......

Absolutely mate, couldn't agree more. In terms of pure boxing, maybe it was fair enough, but as a spectacle and as entertainment, which is the prime purpose of sport after all, Hopkins did his level best to ruin that fight. Again in terms of pure boxing, the judge's scorecards were perhaps a little surprising (well, the 116 - 111 one was), but in terms of sporting spirit Joe more than deserved it as the man who actually tried to give the paying public something to watch. Can't really blame Hopkins, but then again, what the hell, he's still a ****.

When the referee gets a nickname and uses it before the fight when he was talking to the boxers then its time to go. A fight is about the boxers not the referee.

I'm glad to see Calzaghe win. I think he deserved it.

well done joe, you made hard work of it lad but that's only to be expected when you take into accounts hopkins' antics. the executioner didn't come to win that bout, joe was the only one surging forward and that's what the las vegas crowd and judges like. so it's probably only right that calzaghe won it.

Thought Joe did more than enough myself, Hopkins was ok for 3 rounds, then Joe took it to him all the way, always looking to fight, while Hopkins was about holding & spoiling, & using his head at every opportunity, then throwing the odd punch.

If Joe had started a bit more carefully i don't think there would have been a split decision, that knock down counted for a lot in the judges minds. Hopkins would have been well behind without it. imo.

Joe Calzaghe, he's done well the lad. A proper Champion in every sense of the word.

My pre match prediction was rubbish then, ah well at least Joe won, I had him 3 rounds to the good at the end but it was a FIGHT that could have been interpretated either way I feel. Hopkins is such a fricking canny fighter, he just spoils all night long.

Great win, one more in the Milennium vs Jones Jnr and thats it id say!

Is Jones Jnr the only option? Hasn't he been on the decline for some while now?

Watched the re-run of the fight this morning andhave to say that is was an extremely tough one to call.

I would have Calzaghe just edging it but for that first round knockdown (and 10-8 round). If I was a judge I would have had it pretty much even.

All credit to Calzaghe though, he just kept going forward and was severely hampered by Hopkins' disgraceful tactics. Have to say that Hopkins, aside from his blatant gamesmanship, is amazing for a 43 year old.

Well done Calzaghe - surely now he can be classed as the greatest ever British fighter!

The commentators said something about Hopkins having the body of a twenty year old. Awesome athlete but as loop said, his tactics were disgraceful and it wouldve been a travesty if joe, the one who most tried to make it a fight, had lost. Gotta love the way he drops his hands. So dangerous but oh so arrogant. Brilliant
