I rather think Nadal is nadal he's cracked up to be.

Actually I think he is but I've been waiting ages to use that pun and I couldn't hold off any longer.
    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

      Cracking tackle by sidebottom!

Sadly no ivanovic but, Pova should keep you company!
Nadal has a tricky opponent today. Gulbis is very much an up and coming player.

i've totally and utterly lost touch with tennis - especially men's - for a long time now. wimbledon used to be a cornerstone of my summer tv viewing but not any more. i blame pete sampras for making me switch off. think he ruined tennis for a lot of casual viewers. i assume that era of serve and volley bollox is over as nadal and federer seem to have a much more complex game - is this right? is men's tennis worth watching again?

I loved watching Sampras, that second serve was just as deadly as the first, and he had a lot more then just his serve to offer, good coverage of the court was another factor.
I'd most certainly say get back into watching it, some of the return shots Federer connects with is just incredible, and nadal is just phenominal, fast and strong, also like slim said, there's a lot of new talent coming through!

Even though Federer still dominates the game (just about!) any match he is involved is worth watching, especialy at Wimbledon. He plays shots that just don't seem possible.

IMHO the lack of serve and volley is what has made men's tennis a poorer game for the casual viewer. Too many long boring rallies, especially on clay, between big servers and power hitters. It's players like Santoro with the delicate touch who are sadly lacking. Volleying is a tremendous skill when close to the net or with the ball flying at your feet.

                        Err, yes.

Nadal being given a tough time against Gulbis.

In fact he's just lost the first set.

I thought Gulbis would give him a tough match.

you're probably right. i guess i just have a preference for long rallies. kinda like the tactical aspect of it. as usual i have made the assumption that anyone who doesn't see the world in the way i do either has a severe psychiatric disorder or is an utter cunt. or both.
