From the little I know about Cricket I wouldn't have though KP would be a good choice. He seems to not really have an emphasis on playing for the team - as was proved with the way he got out in this test.

I'm sure someone will correct me though

Flintoff would be a poor choice. Last time he bowled himself into the ground trying to make things happen and he needs someone to manage him. Also with his past discipline issues I think he'll be ruled out.

I guess the only candidates are Strauss and KP but Strauss has been in and out of the side recently. It looks like KP will get the nod through lack of alternatives.

It remains to be seen whether or not he's got the tactical nous for the job but I think he's the type of player who won't let the role affect his batting too much. I'd take the opportunity to move him up to 3 as well.

        So for the next Test...

        Strauss
        Cook
        Pietersen (c)
        Bell
        Collingwood
        Shah
        Flintoff
        Prior
        Broad
        Sidebottom
        Anderson

I think KP would be a great captain for a one day side, as he would be able to play his natural attacking game. However, putting him as captain of the test side would limit him too much i think, force him to play within himself and probably not perform.

And even tho i don't want to see Flintoff captain, as it would put too much pressure on him, i think as a senior player the selectors may well have him under consideration.

Personally, I'd like to see it given to Strauss (don't like bowlers or wickies getting the job, too much to do for them) and of the batsem we have left, Cook is a possibility, KP is not the right man in my mind, Collingwood is a no, which leaves Strauss.

          My squad...

          Strauss
          Cook
          Shah
          KP
          Bell
          Collingwood
          Flintoff
          Prior
          Broad
          Jones
          Sidebottom
A Spinner (not Monty...he's too limited in my view, hell KP would do i guess, and we can bring back Anderson as well then)

Congratulations to Vaughan, he didn't deserve that today, he deserves to be recognised as the only England captain in recent times to win more Test matches against Australia than he lost.
Also he's the only England captain to win the Ashes for 20 years.

He was badly let down by the management and the selectors, they should take the blame for the mess English cricket is now in with both captains resigning on the same day.

Collingwood resigned because of Moores, the dressing room is in a right mess, completely split and that is why Collingwood walked. English cricket will take another 2 decades to recover from the Moores era

As for replacements? Flintoff? Remember last time we tried that? He disgraced the team and the game.
Pietersen? Reece is spot on, he's a self-confessed selfish player who doesn't play for the team.
Strauss? Wasn't even in the team in the winter, he needs to re-establish himself. Hasn't exactly excelled with the bat.
Collingwood? Not whilst moores is coach.
            Bell? Not established enough
Bowlers: Again- none of them are guaranteed selections.
Keeper? Who knows who that will be.

The only option I can think of is Cook or someone who isn't currently in the team like Key.
Ridiculous though, none of them can do the job.

Wonder if Tresco will come back in now.

Agreed with everything you say about Vaughan as a captain.

He's always struck me as a thoroughly decent bloke and I felt very sorry for him during the press conference.

Also agreed re the captaincy - we're really struggling for a viable replacement.

Margins eh, if Smith had been given out when he should have been, England would likely have gone on to win that match, Vaughn would still be captain and everything would be so different.

He'd be getting called a tactical genius today, getting ready to play a decider, after what would have been called a fantastic turnaround. Amazing how one wrong umpiring decision can have such a knock on effect.

If young Kevin is made Captain today as is predicted, it's going to be very very interesting to see how he does, and more so how he go's about it.

Agreed...but i worry that it will temper his natural attacking game, and KP is not a player to just sit and defend ball after ball.

But i did like in the one dayers how he let the bowlers set the field to their liking, with minimal interference. Something Vaughan didn't like to do, often to the bowlers frustrations.

I really hope neither KP or Flintoff get the captaincy. It would be a recipe for disaster in my eyes. It is a bit safety first and I'm not sure long term it is a great idea but I think Strauss is the best current candidate.

BTW I'm assuming that from here on in they will want a single captain for both tests and ODIs.
