Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I think you need a specialist opening batsman up there, you can't open with a stroke-player.

As far as openers go: WTF has happened to Gavaskar? He should be in there, then there's Boycott, an uninspiring boring cricketer but unless you ran him out he was there for the duration.
More modern day you have Haynes, greenwich, Atherton, Graham Smith, Matt Hayden all good candidates.

I think though I'd have to go with Gavaskar and Jayasuriya, a great pair of openers there.

Middle order: Bradman, no doubt. Others would be Sobers and probably Tendulkar.
W/K: Healey or Knott, think I'd have to go with Knott just because he was a better keeper.
Spinners: Warne and Murali. Honourable mention for Bishan Bedi, Abdul Quadir and Laker.
          Quicks: Marshall, Ambrose and Hadlee

          So my team would be:

          Gavaskar
          Jayasuriya
          Bradman
          Tendulkar
          Sobers (capt)
          Knott
          Hadlee
          Warne
          Marshall
          Ambrose
          Muralitharan

No Warne or Murali? Crazy man. Crazy.

I find it impossible because so many great cricketers pre-date, er......me. The likes of Grace, Hobbs and the rest. It's so difficult. I think re-phrasing the question "What is the greatest modern-era cricket XI" would be more appropriate.

That's my first attempt - but then I think - why not Sobers, Lara, Imran, Hobbs etc? Impossible.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.
