Khan to face ring legend Barrera

Khan to face ring legend Barrera

Amir Khan will meet seven-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera on 14 March at an unspecified British venue.

The 34-year-old Mexican is a former champion at three weights and has won 64 of his 71 fights.

"It's a big fight for Amir who's been champing at the bit. It's the right fight at this stage of his career," said promoter Frank Warren.

"It'll bring out the best in him. This puts him well and truly on the world stage," he added.

Squaring up to Barrera is undoubtedly the biggest test that Khan, 22, has faced so far in his career.

Last time out in December, Khan beat Irishman Oisin Fagan in his first bout since suffering the first loss of his career - a first-round knockout at the hands of Breidis Prescott last September.

The Olympic lightweight silver medallist split from trainer Jorge Rubio after that defeat and is now guided by Freddie Roach.

Barrera, who inflicted Prince Naseem Hamed's first career defeat in 2001, won his first world title in 1995, and over the years he has faced the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales.

wow what a fight, i know Barrera ain't the same as he was a few years back but what a risky fight, if Khan loses what'll that do to his career?

Win - gets some real credibility.

    Lose - game over.

Dont think its game over if he loses, not really much shame in losing to Barrera while you're still 22 and very green. Though I suppose it depends on how bad the loss was, if he gets schooled for round after round then gets stopped by a non lightweight, who has big physical distadvantages and is inactive then its not a good sign. A narrow decision loss though wouldnt be the end of the world, he'd learn a hell of a lot.

Good fight, and regardless of the outcome with teach him something for once. I think Amir might surprise people here though.

Why? What is wrong with Khan?

From what I have seen of him he seems like a really decent bloke.

just dont like his arrogant attitude. he hasn't earnt the right to be cocky yet. he looked vulnerable against the "poor" fighters and barely won and in his first fight against real opposition he gets mullered!!

If Barrera even has the most remote amount of desire for this fight, he will surely muller Khan.

OMG. Are they crazy? Barrera will destroy Amir.

                  WTF are they thinking?

Prime Barrera would destroy Amir with one had behind his back.

This version of Barrera? Who knows?

Sure he's only a year removed from a 12 rounder with Pacman but the general consensus is that Pacman carried Barrera in that fight.

Khan's a big lightweight. His size and hand speed will cause Barrera problems.

That being said i hope Barrera turns the clock back and takes Amir to school.

Khan, at this stage of his career, doesn't deserve to have an ATG like Barrera on his CV.

Apparently Sky have been putting pressure on SN to deliver Khan in some big fights after the Prescott debacle and the Fagan non-event. Sky are wanting some sort of return on the money they paid out to SN for Khan and Warrens other boxers.

I've decided.....Khan will beat him, he'll have more desire, huge physical advantages and an astonishing speed advantage. Barrera isnt a lightweight and looked awful last time out, he's got another tune up scheduled but the 70+ fights have taken their toll imo.

I wouldnt come close to backing Khan against Casa, Campbell, JMM or Diaz but against a 130 man and with some improvement under Roach he'll do the job here. I think he'll work off the jab and speed kills!

I also think Roach has had a huge say in this fight being made so thats come into my thinking that he's seen enough of MAB against Manny to know Amir would do the job. Im not writing off another one of his speedy underdogs though granted he's no Manny and never will be.
