The effect of a flat tire or a crash to one of the main contenders can be much bigger without radio since it may take longer for the teammates to realice whats going on and drop down to help.
The focus on being in the first1/3 of the bunch will be higher, and that could make crashes more likely.I think the biggest effect will be due to the riders not being used to ride without radio. The tactics will be different, and someone is bound to make a wrong choice.
It will be interesting to see who calls the shots for Astana, Contador or Lance.

IMO it will make things more interesting since "normal" tactics won`t necessarily work.
I think in general racing would be better without radios but there is a real objection that the Tour could be decided by something that happens on one of these two days that couldn't happen on any other stage. That seems somewhat arbitrary. Also the riders aren't used to it - the likes of Armstrong and Moreau are among the few to have ridden in the days before radios - with the result it will be a tactical free-for-all and not necessarily in a good way.

CW said something along the lines of, it's like playing the FA Cup semi-finals and only the semi-finals with an old leather ball on muddy pitches without substitutions.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I don't? Dogs think they can exhibit more 'maleness' just by shouting abuse? Check this out doggie, then maybe you could come back with a better response.

I know all that. I also happen to know what it means that Wiggins is fifth in the GC and Cavendish (winner of Milan-San Remo) is second in the points.

Wiggins is riding brilliantly and is an excellent rider. So is Cavendish.

Usain Bolt is no less a runner because he's slow over 1500m. FFS.

Latest weather forecast for Friday afternoon in the Vosges: thunderstorms.

Could make it interesting (although wet for spectators ). If they race that is.

1402: Oops. A bit of a smash in the peloton, caused by the TV helicopter getting too close and blowing riders about - or at least that's what I'm told. That's something that doesn't affect me on my commute, thankfully. Still, everyone's back on their bikes - I'll bring you more on that, and who was affected, when I find out.
I do hope they've caught that on tape

I never intended to sink Cavendish' ship. Just by finishing Le Tour and winning the green jersey would be an achievement. But Le Tour is about the yellow jersey, this is where all eyes will be.

That's all the Tour is to people (and cats) who know nothing much about cycling and believe the Tour is all that matters.

It's like people who think tennis is all about what happens at Wimbledon.

                          Cavendish was immense.

Hushovd and Farrar just couldn't match it with him.

                          Hushovd still in green.

That's where lies the crux of the matter. Tell it to Neil.

No, it isn't. Wearing green (or any jersey) at any point in a stage race is important although obviously it's who wins it in the end that matters more. However every stage win is also important and that's something that seems to escape most people with only a cursory knowledge of cycling.

Face it, fredo - you know f*ck all about cycling. That's fine of course but stop kidding yourself you do.
