The Athletics Thread (... but predominantly about Bolt)
Do you really think Bolt is dodging Gay? Can't see any reason for it myself.
To a certain extent yes I think he is. They are both dodging each other, albeit Gay perhaps more than Bolt. They clearly dont want to race each other until the World Champs.
This has been happening for years now. Michael Johnson and Maurice Greene used to avoid meeting in the 200m. I assume its a pride thing so they can both remain unbeaten etc.
Only being able to see the top 2 sprinters in the world race against once a season is pathetic
Possibly, but i honestly don't think that Bolt is scared of losing his unbeaten record, the way he can move over the last 40m of a race more or less means he can overcome any deficit...double that for the 200m...i just think Gay is dodging him.
It's about money. It builds up the rivalry, hence the money they get, both by remaining unbeaten for long periods and for when they do actually meet.
The result though is that they tend to meet more at major championships and the odd 'big race' (which is a big race because they're both running it - see above) rather than devaluing their rivalry.
If they're mainly racing each other at major championships, then that's a good thing for athletics really, isn't it?
. Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
