Floyd Mayweather superfight against Amir Khan in May a major doubt as Briton scheduled to fight Devon Alexander

Amir Khan's camp has rubbished claims that the Bolton fighter is looking to pull out of December's clash against Devon Alexander in order to challenge Floyd Mayweather, but rumours abound that legal wrangling is the only thing that is stopping the plug being pulled.

Amir Khan's dream fight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr is under discussion by his promoters Golden Boy but Team Khan moved quickly on Thursday to dispel reports that the fight was a done deal for May 3 next year.

A statement early on Thursday from the boxer's office read: "Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead."

"Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached."

It appeared earlier this week that Devon Alexander, the IBF welterweight champion, had pulled out of a fight with Khan, expected to be in December, to face former world champion Zab Judah instead.

There are believed to be a number of options on the table for the Bolton fighter, with clarification expected over the coming days. If it emerges that Khan does go on to face Mayweather in May, it will mean that the British fighter will have been out of action for 13 months, a lay-off which he has not experienced in his career thus far.

Mayweather, the world's No1 pound-for pound-boxer, recently extended his record to 45-0 with a convincing points victory over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, but a fight between Mayweather and Khan would be at 147lbs, with the American's WBC welterweight belt at stake.

Mayweather's third fight of six on his Showtime TV contract is expected to take place on May 3 next year - traditionally one of the biggest-selling dates for Las Vegas pay per view fights - with Khan, ringside for Mayweather's masterclass against the Mexican earlier this month, claiming that his handspeed could give the American problems.

Virgil Hunter, Khan's trainer, has warned, however, that the contest, mooted for the first half of 2014, could come too quickly for Khan, who looked below par in his last outing against Julio Diaz in April in Sheffield.

Hunter insists that Mayweather "processes things quicker".

Showtime have already revealed that Khan is on their wishlist. As Stephen Espinoza, head of Showtime Sports, told Telegraph Sport two weeks ago: "Amir Khan is a very interesting opponent [for Floyd Mayweather] because of his speed."

"What we saw against Saul Alvarez is that strength alone is not going to do it against Floyd Mayweather, so when you talk about handspeed and foot speed, then you start talking about two guys - Amir Khan and Adrien Broner."

"And whether or not Amir Khan lost to Danny Garcia or not, Amir Khan is one of the fastest fighters out there in the world. It's a real possibility and as a match-up, I like it a lot."

I think he'll have plenty of problems against Alexander tbh
I agree. Garcia was extremely impressive in his last outing. Khan will make a lot of money from fighting Mayweather, but I just don't think he has much of a chance of beating him

Well he went in against Canelo who carries plenty of power. I actually think Garcia would be too slow for Floyd. He'd get picked apart especially with Floyd's right hand lead.

I'd be interested to see Bradley get in the ring with Floyd, he's a very good boxer and could give him a decent fight - not sure he'd have enough though.

Garcia would have a punchers chance but again would most likely come up short.

That's true but Garcia is more of a counter puncher than Canelo, which makes him far more dangerous IMO. Like I said bro, styles make great fights and Mayweather v Khan could be a classic even if the outcome is predictable.

I personally don't think Canelo gets enough credit for his counter punching ability. He's a patient fighter and is a very good counter puncher (the Trout and Mosley fight spring to mind) but he's also able to be aggressive. For me Garcia would get truly outboxed by Mayweather. I think he'd find it difficult to find Floyd. He doesn't even have a great jab for a start.

I agree styles make fights, it's a point I have raised on here a few times. A fight between Khan and Floyd would be interesting for a couple of rounds at least until Mayweather finds his range and timing. Before this fight happens Khan should have at least one more fight. If not, by the time he fights Mayweather he would've been out of the ring for over a year and no amount of training is going to prepare him for a fight against the best boxer on the planet when you have been out of the ring for that long. He needs to earn the right to fight Mayweather imo.

If he can get through the Alexander fight perhaps a fight with Floyd could be on the cards but even then I'm not so sure. I'd quite like to see Khan take on Canelo

Yes, ideally a couple more fight at welterweight would make more sense and then fight Mayweather. Thing is if he beats Devon he'll have a belt too and so a fight with Floyd would definitely be appealing.

You'd really want to see him fight Canelo?

Didn't Khan and Canelo spar when they were trained by Freddie Roach?

I'm not a fan of Khans really, he's overhyped so I'd like to see what he can at those sorts of levels. If he took Canelo out you'd have to say he'd be fully deserving of the shot at Floyd. I think it would be a pretty one sided fight in Canelos favour though.

He is that overhyped almost everyone thinks he is ****, glass jaw etc etc

I think he actually is properly respected as a fighter in the US only.
