It wasn't a vintage performance by any stretch of the imagination. He was too easy to hit at times and Algieri wobbled him on more than occasion despite him not being regarded as a big puncher. Khan had some very good moments especially when he stuck to boxing and controlled the range but he didn't always do this.

I hope he gets the Mayweather fight now and I think it's a possibility especially as Garcia is apparently fighting on August the 1st. I don't see Mayweather fighting Cotto at 160 which I would have been happy to see. I think Cotto (providing he beat Geale next week) will fight Canelo.

Nail on the head. It was a very average performance at best from Khan against a fighter who, if we are to be honest about it, is really somewhere between midcarder and journeyman.

A number of times during the fight I found myself thinking that Khan was lucky that Algieri is pretty much a feather fisted fighter as Algieri was able to time and catch Khan with accurate shots to the head.

Don't think there can be any doubt about Khan being the better man on the night and my own scoring of the fight had him win 115-113, but if Khan thinks he is on the same tier as Mayweather and Pac then guys like Algieri should be beat in a far more empahtic manner as Algieri is a make up the numbers type guy rather than being a genuine force of any sort in the division.

But it is a win that will have the casual fans excited, and probably one that will get Khan his Mayweather shot, despite him never having beaten a top fighter in the division his entire career, and there will be all the usual hype and build to it.

Once again I find myself agreeing with you Jaco. Perhaps I was harsh with the 114-114 scorecard but I guess there were a couple of rounds that could have gone either way. It certainly wasn't a walk in the park though which I expected. Is it me Jaco or do you get the feeling Khan looks better against southpaws than orthodox fighters? He just looks open to the left hook and right hands. Some of his best performances have been against southpaws such as Judah, Collazo and Alexander.

Some of his better performances have been against southpaws alright, and your premise does gather a bit more weight when you consider that he has never beaten one of the top orthodox fighters in any of the divisions he has fought in.

Plus the three guys who beat Khan (Prescott, Peterson, and Garcia) are all orthodox fighters.

But would argue that one of the main reasons why he has looked better against Southpaws is down to most if not all the southpaws he faced being pretty moderate to light punchers.

Khan simply does not get put in with heavy hitters. You can go through his entire record and you will not find one heavy hitter. He and/or his management avoids them like the plague. It is nothing new, but it is very blatant as a simple read through his record shows.

That same record shows that he has never beaten a top tier fighter in his entire creer, so it gets a bit hard to buy into the pr spiel that he is a world class fighter.

World class fighters beat the best, Khan has never stepped into the ring with the best, let alone beaten even one fighter of that level. Would go as far as to say that he has not even once beaten the best that the second tier has to offer as he lost both times when he went in against that level and he never went back to avenge even one of his defeats.

But Khan's PR and marketing people are top class though, and that plays a very big part in creating the myth that he is a world class boxer.

Don't get me wrong though, Khan does have talent and he does have a lot of ability, but he has never really shown how much he actually has and I have a feeling that he will eventually retire having never beaten even one top tier or one top second tier boxer.

And if Khan finished his career like that I think it would be a shame because he would have accomplished less as a boxer than his talent suggests he should have.

He has won a world title which is an accomplishment of note, but like many fighters who have won a version of a world title belt he has never really been seen as the very best belt holder in his class.

Would you not regard Maidana as big puncher though Jaco? Even Garcia carries some power especially the left hook?

Poor Amir, that was meant to be his big showcase and he ended up scraping a win v a man Pacquiao put down 6 times and battered around the ring for 12 rounds. Same old faults and no doubt he'll change trainer again next time he loses with a load of hype about how everything is fixed now but he will never change.

Hopefully this puts to bed the laughable notion that he bothers Floyd Mayweather, he doesnt in the slightest.

I still think he will initially due to his style but I fully expect Mayweather to time him and go on to win by UD or late ko.
