He used to be a pretty successful track cyclist before doing road racing. He has won a few Olympic golds. So its not a sudden change in fortune. He also finished 3rd in the 2009 Tour de France.

He has won more Olympic Medals that Sir Chris Hoy!

In Road Racing he was winning stages as early as 2001 and 2009 was he first real big season.
Should've won the Tour in 2011 but for an injury forcing him out!

I get people who question him and any other cyclist who gains success though. The sports reputation is tainted at best and will take a lot of years before it recovers.

Fair enough, so no great surprise he did as well as he did last year then. Cheers guys.

He was junior world pursuit champion at 18 which pretty much by definition mades him best in the world for his age.

So him being best in the world fifteen years later is absolutely no cause for concern, especially given the strides made against doping in recent years which has inevitably made it easier for clean riders to do well.

It wouldn't be shocking in the sense of 'another TdF winner was on drugs' sense. But just from following his career over quite a few years it'd go against everything I percieve him to be personally.

Just things like in 2007 when he was clearly disgusted with Moreni when he failed a drug test when he was in the same team.

It's a legal and financial minefield for LA. And it's clear that he has been well coached to circumvent those traps in the interview.

I think it'd be so much easier if he has accepted that he'll go bankrupt, then he can freely admit to everything. And given the fact that he has been able to hold on top of the road cycling world for 7 years (even with dope), he is clearly set to fight all the way.

All quite consistent with his personality.
