I was at Murrayfield yesterday, it was a brilliant game.
We should have won. Even after a horrific start, we came back into tit and basically bossed it from 10 - 65. As good as we have played in the last 2 years. We left maybe 2-3 trys out there, one with Graham going soooo close in the corner. We were turned over 2 or 3 times on the line.
We had a 9 point lead going into the final 20, but then the previous efforts stared to show. The game pretty much turned on a deliberate knock on from Dempsey. Down to 14 with 15 to go. Had we seen that moment out, who knows.
Where does this leave us?
Well, with Finn Russell in the team with a renewed sense of optimism, he is a once in a generations player. The best I have seen of Scotland has been with him running the game at 10. Will he have bad games? Yes. Will it be acceptable given the good games. Yes!!! The crowd left Townsend under no illusions what he means to us as a player. It is so ****ing Scottish to have the head coach not get on with our best player... If Russell had been in camp for longer you can only assume it would have helped.
Over all though a good step in the roight direction after a **** year.
Where does it leave us? Well, who knows. We have the 6Ns where on our day we are a match for anyone. We have a reasonable pool of players to call on.
The WC. Just a ****ing nightmare. I just do not see a scenario where we can beat either of Ireland or South Africa. And with that in mind I just want to see more of what I saw yesterday. If we are to play in these games then these stronger nations have to earn their victories.
I think Townsend will go after the World Cup, and I think his time is pretty much up.
There was a very emotional moment at the start with Doddie Weir. Very sad to see his recent deterioration.
