Contador doesn't seem to have it yet, he's competitive but drops time in the odd stage here and there. He'll probably get it together by July though, one way or another.

Yet more hints in today's Guardian that Wiggins is targetting both races this year.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

        Looks refreshing

It'll be a tough gig for Wiggins to do both I guess but I can't imagine he won't be wanting to at least try and defend his crown

Thanks for the spoiler Our Casemore. Although, to be on the safe side, I avoided the thread altogether until I'd watched the coverage.

Sky's coverage has been really bad though. Talking heads in the studio is so unnecessary as there's time to say everything while showing the racing. And it was so shamelessly focused on the Sky team it was cringeworthy.

Good win for Froome though. I thought he'd be a bit better in the TT yesterday but he was as good as he needed to be I suppose and his impressive performances were on Saturday and in the prologue.

Wow. No appeal of the ban, 6-0, the PFA top 3 in order, now yet another of my predictions proves correct.

(I don't count all of my correct predictions that Osborne's policy won't work as any idiot with a basic understanding of economics could have predicted that.)

Bradley Wiggins targets victories in Giro d'Italia and Tour de France

              • Wiggins on collision course with Sky colleague Chris Froome
              • 'We both want to win the Tour and we're on different paths'

Sir Bradley Wiggins has said he sees his bid for victory at this year's Giro d'Italia as the first part of a possible double of wins in the Giro and Tour de France. That goal would place him among the pantheon of road cycling greats but may set him on a possible collision course with his runner-up of last year, Chris Froome, Sky's designated leader at the Tour for this year.

"That's always been what we have set out to do, from the start of the year, although whether I get the opportunity to do that as leader at the Tour remains to be seen," said Wiggins on Monday. "That's always been the goal, I sat down with Dave [Brailsford] and Tim [Kerrison] and we said I'd try and do this. This has always been about the next three months, trying to do those two big hurdles."

Wiggins conceded that the matter of his cohabitation with Froome at the Tour de France may seem a complex business to outsiders – the more so as Froome is in the form of his life with three major stage race wins this season, most recently in last week's Tour of Romandie – but he said the question of Sky's Tour leadership may well be decided on the road as the race happens and that his hope is that he and Froome will remain co-leaders through the first week.

"I don't think it's that confusing. We both want to win the Tour de France and we're on different paths towards that. We will get to three days out from the race I imagine, in Corsica, and Dave will have to make a decision as to how we do this.

"In an ideal scenario we'll both be in incredible condition, both capable of winning the Tour de France, then it all lies in Dave's hands to say: 'Right, this is what we're going to do. We're going to go with you Chris, or with you Brad, or you know what, for the first week we'll go with both of you and see what happens'. So in an ideal scenario we'd be [going] with both of us for that first week and let the racing take care of itself."

Wiggins's trainer, Tim Kerrison, has told the Guardian that he believes that physically the Giro-Tour double is within the capability of his protege, and Wiggins clearly believes that too. The only issue in his mind appears to be whether Froome will be in such good condition that Sky puts all its strength behind the Kenyan-born Briton.

"I believe more than ever now that I can win the Giro and the Tour this year, the thing with the Tour is that there may be someone who is in a better position than me to win it, in which case I have to play second fiddle which is fine. As sportsmen you can only do that, you can only train to be as good as you can be, if someone is better than you that's tough and you have to get on with it. That's the way it's been since we sat down in January and talked about how this whole Tour thing was going to work out."

Froome is odds on to win the tour and Brad is 16/1, would you disagree with that?

Clearly that's not a reflection of their relative abilities.

I think Froome probably will lead the Tour team. It's hard to know quite how much all these recent pronouncements from Wiggins are just there to chuck out headlines and distract journalists from his immediate target, the Giro.

But, while I think Froome is being honest when he says today that he's the designated Tour leader right now, I do think what will happen in July for Sky is an open question.

Sounds like it's all going off between Wiggins and Froome!

                      Inevitable really.

This sort of thing happens fairly often. It doesn't always end up a problem.

But it can sometimes and then it's all very entertaining. The rivalry between The Badger and Lemond at the Tour in '85 and '86 for instance. And Roche's Giro win in '87 which so p*ssed off his teammate, Visentini who believed he was sole team leader, was another great spat which split the team.

No code has to be inserted here.Today's TTT course is short but supposedly very technical so it'll be interesting. Important to avoid any mistakes at this stage. I imagine any gaps will be small but a good performance from Astana could put some pressure on Wiggins as he will be aware that he has to hope Nibali's performances in the ITTs will have to be quite a bit weaker than his.

Good win for Sky today. It probably doesn't really change anything but it at least means no extra pressure for Wiggins. And with the time bonuses on offer and likely to favour Nibali, 14 seconds today could yet be important.

Poor ride from Garmin considering they should have been pretty good.
