As if the profile wasn't brutal enough, the weather was terrible. Basso retired due to hypothermia.

Good ride from Horner but Nibali's going to have have a really bad day or some really bad luck.

Valverde limited his losses well considering he was dropped before the final climb.

Shame about Roche. Hope he can hold it together in the last week.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

        Wow, another great final climb.

        Three seconds! Just three seconds!!

The GP Quebec was a pretty good race although one day races so often disappoint right at the end and this was no exception.

Yesterday was also the 254th anniversary of the death of James Wolfe, killed leading the attack on Quebec which led to British supremacy over the French in North America. This wasn't mentioned in the commentary though. A missed opportunity I felt.

Do you think Horner can hold on to his 3 seconds? That's potentially a bonus time change in positions isn't it

              Comment

I haven't looked at where the intermediate sprints are today but the last three weeks suggests the final climb - the Angliru - suits him better than Nibali. It gets up to 21% in places and Nibali is tiring. If Horner could drop him yesterday, when the climb was nowhere near as steep, then he can do it again today.

Horner looks in great form and has had a lot less racing this season, despite Nibali's long layoff after the Giro, so he has to be favourite. But then anyone can have a bad day.

And even if they're together at the top then Nibali can beat him in a sprint if there are any bonuses left.

                It's going to be exciting.

Sounds like it should be a really good end to the tour then, not caught as much of it as I would have liked but what I have seen has been really good.

I have to say I'd never heard of Horner before this tour and he's no spring chicken either

                  Comment

He's always been mentioned, won stages and so on but he's never done anything like this before. The Tour of the Basque Country in 2010, the Tour of California a year later. Otherwise very little since the early 2000's. I thought he might win a stage but I don't think anyone seriously considered him as anything but an outsider over three weeks.

Admittedly this Vuelta has been fixed for the climbers like him. Even the ITT favoured them over everyone but Cancellara and Martin and they're two of the best time triallists ever. Pozzovivo came third FFS when everyone expected him to lose three to six minutes.

Even so, Horner's performance now, after several years of a relative lack of success, makes you wonder whether there's a connection to the fact the sport is undoubtedly cleaner.

                      From the BBC

Vuelta a Espana winner Chris Horner missed a drugs test after anti-doping officials went to the wrong hotel, his team say

                      Comment

That's a strange way to word it. 'Missed' is an active verb so it insinuates he did something to avoid the test when clearly he didn't. In effect the test 'missed' him.

If the editorial standards of BBC News were the same as BBC Sport then there'd be real cause for concern.

Wiggins looked good today. But he'd better hope it doesn't rain for the world championship TT.

He did, really went at it which was good to see, in the Giro he really struggled with the wet conditions

                            Comment

One or two corners he looked a little slow compared to others but it's hard to tell I suppose.

The WC TT should be amazing with him, Cancellara and Martin. They all look to be in fantastic form.
