    Tai Chi

Anyone else here practice tai chi? I've been learning the short form yang style for the past 4 months and love it, really look forward to the classes. Great for balance and relaxation. The partner stuff works really well too.

I've been told it takes about a year to learn how to do the short form but obviously a lot longer to master it. If anyone has been doing this I'd like to know in particular at what point you can practice outside under a tree without feeling like a dickhead

There was a dude in the park today with his top off doing this. Looked a right plank.

    Hope this helps

Is this connected to Lou Reed's claim today about his liver transplant?

      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Indeed it does - I'm going to have a wait another couple of decades before I'm completely disinhibited

Autocomplete changed dickhead to deckhand in my op - wasn't trying to start another boating thread...

If ever there was a warning to young people of the dangers of heroin and alcohol playing with Metallica...

I did Tai Chi for about 4 or 5 months last year. I loved it. Really enjoyed the qi gong part too. Didn't get to the stage where I was enjoying the partner work but if I'd stuck with it I would have. The guy who was doing the class started up an Internal Kung Fu class nearer to me so I might take that up... As regards practising under a tree, I'd say start it as soon as possible to see if the whole ultimate fist business stands up to a bottle attack by local scrotes.

Yes, the qi gong is very stimulating. I'm definitely feeling my balance is improving as well in a fairly short space of time. My ankle is half metal after an argument with a flight of stairs 15 years ago and wobble boards are a dull experience after the first couple of goes.

My local park used to be mugging central but I'm more likely to be gently applauded now by quinoa munching picnickers and yummy mummies with labradoodles called Maurice.

I'd like to move on to kung fu but my only window on the training involved comes from Drunken Master and I may be a bit old for it. I also have a feeling that if I ever became halfway decent at fighting then I'd be a right horrible *******

Kung Fu can be anything really. Tonnes of different styles and expressions.

Were you thinking of doing a martial art and Tai Chi appealed to you? Did you consider anything else? I've had the martial arts thing in my head for a couple of years now. I regret not doing one when I was younger but I'm unsure as to what my reasons are now. I've looked at loads but I constantly suspect that I'd be surrounded by ******s in most classes. I'd be the only sound one

The Tai Chi instructor said that Internal Kung Fu was a bit more dynamic than Tai Chi but you still had to do qi gong and learn forms. I think I might go with it.

It's great for defending yourself against people on Valium.

I've been struggling with my balance and flexibility for a few years due to old injuries and a fairly sedentary office job, I find the gym boring and yoga is effective but a lonely business. A friend of mine did it and said it was great for balance and posture and I'm into the meditative aspects too so I had a look on youtube - it's flowing and graceful but you need strength to do it as well. And I can't really invest the time in fitness for the other martial arts - I cycle for an hour and walk for 45 minutes at least every day so I'm covered there. Also, I looked online and there was a class at just the right time 15 minutes from work so tai chi it was! I too wished I'd started it earlier...

I've just looked up the internal kung fu stuff and it looks quite interesting. The class I do does push hands stuff at the end of the class and as a separate one on another day and they do swords and spears at the advanced classes (haven't seen a broken bottle form yet ), so it looks like it has aspects of that. The martial stuff is definitely a lot more dynamic from what little I've done. When you practice the movements they explain the stances and transitions in terms of fighting or defending against an enemy.

I've signed up for another follow on class where they focus on things in more detail rather than just the form. With that one you have to hold the stances correctly for longer periods to build up strength and memory.

Anyhoo, this is the short form that I am learning, should have all the moves at the end of the year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBvF...e_gdata_player.

This is the one I do, at the Borough dojo
