If Smith can get enough support to get a ton, despite an under-par effort, Australia will feel as if they've gotten out of jail. A total around 230-240 definitely means they're still in it.

Tend to agree with this, unless Root can come in and keep it ticking. Needs the openers to weather the storm and make it so the ball isn't shiny anymore. Which I cant see happening.

Fair play to Smith but that was hugely disappointing from England - to have them at 122-8 & then allow the game to meander was shocking & awful captaincy in the last session from Root. Not for the first time in this type of situation either.
