Has anyone used that Couch to 5k podcast from the NHS?

I took up cycling a few months ago and loved it, but now the nights have drawn in, I am kind of limited to the weekends. So I have decided to give running a go. I have tried a few times over the years, but did it with no real plan or goal in mind.

Does it work? Any other tips for beginners?

I didn't bother with the podcasts, but I used the original website that hosted the couch to 5k programme two years ago.

It worked for me. Really struggled to run even 2 minutes straight at first, but now I can do 10k no problem and I'm looking to train for a marathon next year. Since you've done cycling, you may find the first 3 or so weeks easier fitness wise. It's just your feet and achilies that need the attention. Get them accustomed to it, and you'll be flying.

      There's a 5k to 10k programme too.

Go get fitted out for running footwear first, seriously. You're starting, get it sorted before problems may start.

        Then do this programme. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Eat properly and do this and the weight will fly off.

I'm down to 12.5 stone from just under 18 in March
Contrary to popular belief, I have huge genitals.

          5.5 stone in 8 months?

So you guys reckon they work then? That's good. I think im going to start tonight. I cant run for anymore than 2 minutes either at the moment.

Why so militant on the shoes, Dan? Are they really that important early on? To me, as its so early into it they seem pointless. How much is a decent pair of trainers?

You wouldnt get past the very first session

Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.

I had to run somewhere at the weekend, that's when I realised how unfit I was.

Go to a proper running shop and have your feet checked out (most decent ones do this)for things like over pronation and they'll recommend the right sort of trainers for you, it does make a difference with impact etc... remember you don't need to purchase them from them anyway but worth checking out

Spotlight did a show on energy drinks and part of it focused on running shoes. Their tests concluded that they don't actually prevent injury and that your best just running in a pair of shoes you feel comfortable in. Well in actual fact your best to run bare foot (if running properly), but unless you live in Bedrock then I guess that's not practical.

No. I dont like running so much nowadays. I used to run for fun and represented the county in cross country running.

As you can see higher up the thread. I started with 30 mins on the elliptical cross country trainer and 20 mins rowing. After the first 3 days I was totally shattered. Now it is much easier. I am now doing 30 mins on the elliptical cross country trainer and 30 mins rowing, plus I try to go that little further with distance each day

Even in two weeks I can see a difference physically

Its easy, its all in the technique. I dont go all out, I have the highest resistance setting and row for 6.2 kms

How long can a person go without pooping before it becomes unhealthy or dangerous? Can it still be dangerous even if there are no signs of discomfort?

Lovely conversation starter for a Monday morning.
