How long does each term last?

Plus for the short term - with the increased revenue from the Premiership football rights would it really make much of a difference for the 4th team in trems of revenue - if they only made the 2nd round of the knock out stages?

I'd imagine the sponsors and TV companies wont be happy either

The idea is a fair one in principle but in reality it will lower the quality of the tournament and probably mean less money coming into the game (UEFA) as I'm sure TV / Sponsors will not shell out as much money for an inferior product

He has done a great job so why change it. Platini would just do exactly what Blatter tells him to do.

Platini has previously said that he does not recognise the G14 group , and also he was apparently against us being admitted to the Champions League the other year because he felt that we had not been punished enough after Heysel.

He's also up Blatters arse so expect a massive change for the worse

I'm sure Platini came up with a hairbrained idea a few years to outlaw tackling! Whilst a lot of his manifesto looks ok, I'm not sure about the limit on CL places. On one hand it's outrageous to take a place away for no other reason than to appease lesser nations-tv money/viewing figures will drop but will give chance for Eastern European countries to develop (but to what gain, will we ever see another Eastern European CL winner?) The UEFA cup is an appalling hell hole of a competition and will not be appealing to any of the 4th placed teams.

But then again it could stimulate competition in our league, it is very pathetic to be aiming for 4th place (even 2nd and 3rd) just because it means cl footy, in a way it makes challenging for the title almost meaningless as clubs will change their goal to qualification rather than mounting a real challenge.

Platini will be under so much pressure if he changes the CL by reducing the amount of teams for the big 3 participants.
TV money will decrease as well as sponsors. I think he was bluffing in saying that.
I like him actually. He's young, enthusiastic & loves the sport.

Michel Platini has been elected Uefa's new president after beating previous incumbent Lennart Johansson in a vote in Dusseldorf.

Johansson had spent 17 years in the post, but will now pass control over to French footballing legend Platini.

The former Juventus star won the election at Uefa's Congress by 27 votes to 23 to deny Johansson a fifth term in office.

Among Platini's election pledges was a promise to cut the maximum number of places in the UEFA Champions League for one country to three.

He had also been advocating the introduction of two extra assistant referees to aid match officials, rather than resort to the use of video technology.

During a wonderful playing career, Platini won virtually all the game's major honours, with only a World Cup title eluding his grasp.

Platini did play in three World Cup finals tournaments, but his finest hour was in captaining France to the 1984 European Championship title on home soil, when he was the competition's top scorer.

At club level, he was a huge success at St Etienne and Italian giants Juventus, and was named European Footballer of the Year three times in a row in the mid-1980s.

He retired from playing in 1987 and took over as France's national team coach a year later before stepping down in 1992 after the European Championship in Sweden.

Since then, he has played a prominent role in the organisational side of the game, and was a key figure in France staging the 1998 World Cup.

Meanwhile, West Ham United chairman Eggert Magnusson has lost his place on Uefa's executive committee following his decision to stand down as president of the Icelandic Football Association.

He will enforce this rule (i.e 3 Clubs qualifying for the CL) as he's a very stubborn and forceful man. G14 won't make him change his mind.

                            You read that here.

Any rule change such as this will have to be voted by a UEFA executive committee. Platini himself does not have the power to enforce such a move. He can merely propose a ballot and try and persuade the members of the committee to follow his lead.

I very, very much doubt it will happen.

He has already said that nothing will change before 2009,and that members will have to agree changes.

I know it won't change, but I'm an old fart who misses the days when only the Champions got into the European Cup, and it was always us. I want things to change back to those days!
