Nelson are delighted to announce they will be the historic opening opponents for the newly-formed AFC Liverpool.

It'll be a good old Blues versus Reds clash for the Merseysiders first ever competitive match, which will take place at Victoria Park on Saturday 19th July with a 3.00pm kick-off. It will fittingly be known as "The Joe Fagan Commemorative Trophy".

AFC Liverpool is the new independent football club owned by Liverpool fans and run by Liverpool fans. It will be a genuine grassroots, not for profit football club, and is aimed especially at Liverpool fans who have become priced out of Premier League football. It'll feature the same colours, the same songs, the same community of Reds.

The club has applied for, and is expected to take part in, the Second Division of the Vodkat League in the 2008/09 season, although with any luck - in the nicest possible way - we won't be joining them! We'll save the league matches for Division One in 2009/10.

The historic match between the two sides will be played in honour of the legendary Joe Fagan, who managed both clubs during his career with fantastic success.

Joe joined Nelson as player-manager in 1951, staying for two seasons. His Blues side won the then-illustrious Lancashire Combination in his first season in scintillating fashion, scoring a remarkable 139 goals in the process, and the club narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Football League.

Moving onto Liverpool in 1958, "Uncle Joe" became part of the famed "boot-room" team formed when Bill Shankly arrived a year later. He undertook various jobs, culminating in becoming first team manager in 1983. In his first season the Reds completed a remarkable treble of League Cup, League Championship and European Cup, beating Roma in the final of the latter on their own ground.

In his second and final season Liverpool lost out to Everton in the Championship, and Juventus in the European Cup Final - although the latter game proved utterly meaningless following the tragedies at Heysel.

This will be a great positive game to open up the next campaign, and a great opportunity for us all to experience AFC Liverpool at first hand. The Reds' fans and staff will certainly be assured of a warm welcome to Victoria Park.

NEW football club AFC Liverpool will play one of their first games to commemorate the 50th anniversary of former Reds boss Joe Fagan’s arrival at Anfield.

The recently-formed club, set up by fans fed up by rising Premiership match prices, will face Nelson FC on July 19.

The Lancashire side were the first side which Joe Fagan took charge of when he started out on his managerial career.

The winners will take home the Joe Fagan Commemorative Trophy for a competition that is likely to be held as a one-off.

The Liverpool legend first joined the club in 1958 as a coach, and went on to win the treble as manager.

This was also on the Official LFC website.

Kinda shows that AFCLiverpool isnt anti-LFC if they are running the story doesn it?

Rick Parry gives thumbs-up for AFC Liverpool

May 27 2008 by Luke Traynor, Liverpool Echo

REDS chief executive Rick Parry today backed new fans' club AFC Liverpool and vowed to "co-operate" with the venture.

The surprise move saw the Anfield supremo this week write to the newly-formed outfit to offer his support.

AFC Liverpool, set up by fans fed up with rising Premiership match prices, is likely to start its first season in the Vodkat (North West Counties) League this autumn.

Mr Parry’s support is a big boost for the club, who say they are not trying to be an alternative to Liverpool FC.

It is believed to be one of the first times a big football club has publicly backed an alternative shoot-off venture.

A letter from Mr Parry to AFC officials read: “Bryce Morrison (club secretary) has passed me your letter. On the basis of your letter there is every reason to believe that we can co-exist and co-operate and that will certainly be my aim.

“Doubtless there will be issues that will arise and will need to be solved. But I approach this with a positive frame of mind.

“I’d like to wish you the best of luck with your endeavour and I know how much hard work will be required.

                  “Yours sincerely, Rick Parry.”

AFC Liverpool founder Alun Parry told the ECHO: “I thought what Rick and the club have done is outstanding.

“They didn’t need to come out and do it – they could have stayed in the wings and watched how things develop.

“This shows the outstanding bond between the club and its supporters. They recognise we are a friendly venture and realise that we are interested in people who can’t get in to Anfield.

“The club recognise that, this way, fans will stay within the LFC family.”

AFC Liverpool’s first fixture will be a friendly match against St Helens Town on July 16 at Ashton-in-Makerfield.

The ground has a 1,000 capacity and is likely to be full as early curiosity in the club continues.

So far, 500 people have signed up as paid members of the club, earning it £10,000.

It means they will have a vote in the running of the side.

AFC manager and former Burscough boss Derek Goulding is close to finalising arrangements with the 36 players needed to form first and second string teams.

                          Yes of course

I was enquiring if they'd be sporting "official" LFC kits - so something else?

It should be something else in my opinion - perhaps a nice familiar retro-style kit, nice red with white v-neck collar?

The kit will be a kit from a supplier. It wont be from LFC. At the minute we have a couple of offers on the table from various companies but we are in an advanced stage with one brand.
