It's got nothing to do with sides?

The guy is mentally ill; it doesn't excuse some of things he's done and I'm sure part of the problem now is he is tormented by some of these things.

But it say he's had enough chances - chances of what? Help? Living? Do we give up on him and let him kill himself?

What a world we live in if we don't try and help vulnerable people.

Given up booze for long periods of time? Granted he's failed more than once but if you've ever known an alcoholic then you'll have plenty of sympathy.

If not you'll live in blissful ignorance.

Granted he's made bad mistakes - I can only assume the holier-than-thou ****ers in this thread queuing up to condemn Gascoigne have never ****ed anything up in their perfect lives.

The man's a mess, and has been for ever. That doesn't justify some of his behavior over the years, and undoubtedly there are many people in this world who've suffered in ways not entirely dissimilar to him and never had even a fraction of the opportunities for help that he might have done. But that's irrelevant to his individual situation, as it would be to anyone else's as well. Not everyone is capable of change, and they deserve no less pity for being like that.

Compassion is a failing trait in this world it seems sometimes

Some people are so ignorant to mental illness it's beyond belief. If your chemical balance is ****ed it isn't your fault. Narrowmindedness, a blessing in disguise ey.

i suppose though, you can't be blamed really for being so clueless if you or someone close to you hasn't been through anything like it

I know plenty about mental illness. But unfortunately it's become the latest excuse.

Develop a drinking problem, beat their missus / kids, but it's all OK, they want to a clinic, slates clean.

People need to take responsibility for their own actions. Including getting treatment and sticking with it when they are mentally ill.

The first time it's not their fault, granted. You can even forgive a relapse or 2. But at the end of the day they make the decision on if they will stick with treatment or not, and if they choose not to then they are responsible for what follows. They can not choose if they are ill or not, but they can choose how they deal with it.

Even mental illness isn't a get out of jail free card to walk through life hurting everyone who cares about you and taking no responsibility.

                                .

This is the nub of the problem. As Shaggy mentioned earlier Gazza saw his friend killed in an RTA.

He has subsequently said that he feels responsible for the fatality yet he was only a kid at the time.

So he's had 30 something years of torment rightly or wrongly feeling that the accident was his fault. Maybe if his character trait was to say "**** it, nothing to do with me", he wouldn't be suffering now.
