I think that whilst Ronaldo has had personal problems these have been exacerbated by poor physical discipline. As has been said, he is within his rights to do what he likes, but perhaps if he had taken more care of himself over the last few years (it's not like he's just all of a sudden become a fat ******* overnight) he would have been able to carry on playing consistently and would have been in a position at this moment in time to keep his career going. He might not care about that, more power to him, but it is gauling to watch a player with so much natural talent potentially sever off years of playing time due to lack of self-control.

Ronaldo is not the only player who has fallen into this category; Maradona, Collymore, Van Der Meyde, Mutu, Ronaldinho etc, have all pissed some part of their career up a wall and jeopardised the potential for future success due to weakness of the flesh. Hell, we're all human and people make mistakes, but if you have great talent and limited playing time you have to squeeze as much out of your career as you possibly can IMO.

see - i kinda agree with your point in a way but at the same time think it's bollocks and feel like arguing for arguements sake

firstly it's not like Ronaldo is 26 and is ****ing around, getting pissed, rumours of being a party animal or a coke head or anything. He is what 31/32 and been playing at the top for something like 15 years and he has achieved ****ing everything with all the injuries he has had! He has hardly wasted his talent imo.

As such I'd have to disagree with your comparisons

Maradona - banned from the sport for drugs, was known to be it to his coke, in terms of achievments and ability he can be compared with ronaldo, but as far as i am aware there is absolutley no rumours/signs/questions marks over ronaldo's professional attitudes in terms of taking drugs etc. If ronaldo goes on to retire then becomes a fat bloated coke head then fair enough good comparasion

Collymore - stan the man lost the plot, he clearly has had some difficulities and his top flight career(in that i mean playing at the very top ie liverpool/england - acmilan/brazil) ended at an earlier age than ronaldo's - and plus to even compare collymore's career to ronaldos is laughable - ronaldo may have liked a pie or two, mabe even a drink, myabe he hated training/keeping fit but he still went on to achieve practically everything possible. Hardly a waste of talent like collymore

Van Der Meyde - again, like with collymore, his career went tits up at an earlier age than ronaldos, plus he is a well known alcoholic, something which i'm pretty sure ronaldo isn't - and then there is the comparsions in acievements again

Mutu - another coke head banned from the game, plus not even close to the ability of ronaldo, Mutu was banned at the age of 25!!!! has ronaldo ever been banned for anything! - it's not even worth embarrasing ronaldo by mentioning mutu in the same sentance

Ronaldinho's situation is propbably the closest - a true top class player, who seems to be all over the place at the moment. Only differences is i don't recall ronaldinho suffering anywhere near the injures that ronaldo has and add to the fact ronaldo has still achieved more!

to sum - how the **** anyone can say ronaldo is a waste of space or has ruined his career is beyond me.

The difference with Ronaldo is that he has had a few serious knee injuries and as a result he will never be the same players again. He knows that, knee injuries happen and they are nothing to do with your lifestyle.

I can understand him letting himself go a bit, he can't help the fact that his knee is ****ed forever.

However i can't forgive him for paying for sex with tranny's

I'm not trying to create an exact correlation between Ronaldo's situation (never mind career) and the players I mentioned, that would just be ****ing stupid

But it's been clear for years that Ronaldo has been on the slide. He was known as the biggest spice boy at Real and frankly it's far too apologetic to simply blame injuries for derailing this poor man's career. He has had a hand in that himself.

Nobody is suggesting that Ronaldo has been a 'waste of space'. On the contrary it is the sheer level of talent he displayed which makes it disappointing to see how his career has decayed so drastically. If anyone is trying to convince me that his career is over at the age of 31 and he has nothing left in the engine then they are barking up the wrong tree. He has let himself go, it's as clear-cut as that.

I wasn't really meaning to single Ronaldo out, more to highlight the seeming whimsicality with which some modern footballers treat their bodies. If you had that kind of talent wouldn't you be wanting to play until you could possibly play no longer?

As for the comment regarding Ronaldo achieving more than Ronaldinho - the latter actually has a European Cup Winner's medal. Ronaldo never, ever will. Certainly not now anyway.

              - haha i left myself open with regard the European Cup medal, was waiting for that.

That said tho, arguably ronaldo has achieved things that ronaldinho never will too

I agree, that in some respects he has let himself go - he is hardly say a 'gary mac' who lived like a nun and played for 20 yrs or whatever imo honest opninion it's a mix of things with ronaldo,

for one he was from a poor area, then shot to superstardom and became a multi millionaire - i think 99% of the worlds population would struggle in some way with that, plus his injuries have been horrific, as i said his injuries would have finished lesser players. It does come down to the type of person you - but he has never gone completley off the rails, he has just piled on pounds when he is injured or during the off season - I think ronaldo loves football and would love to play on as long as possible.

Who knows, all ifs and buts but what if he never received any of the serious injuries he had and stayed fit - would he have let things slip then? probably not? I reckon the fact he was getting injured all the time, got him depressed upset, caused him to relax maybe have a few drinks and let his condition drop - i think the injuries and the 'let himself go' issues go hand in hand imo. We will never know but if he never got injured he may never have let hinself go - does that make sense

                Yes it does

You make some very interesting points regarding his heritage and mental state and I see what you mean. I suppose the only person who really knows what's happened is the man himself, and I am totally sincere when I say that I hope he comes back into fitness and is able to play on a couple more seasons.

aye - it's obv he's not a complete madman or completley gone of the rails, he has just struggled partly cause of bad injuries and partly cause he relaxed and let himself slip. But it this way, if i was a millionaire and was told i couldn't work for 6 months i'd prob let myself slip a lot more than him

I'm sure recently he said in a interview (think it may hve been to do with the transvestite scandal ) that since he got injured again he was lost and depressed etc and didn't know what to do. I have had a few injuries, nothing as serious but i'd imagine getting seriously injured and being out of the game he obv does love must be seriously disheartening and would test anyones character. -

I remember watching a programme with Jamie redknapp when he was injured and was working his bollocks off but even tho he was in shape he just could not get over the injuries and he was really depressed about it, I have seen a few other programmes when players talk about long term injures etc it's an interesting insight into how the majority (prob95%) feel - most people seem to think that these footballers are not arsed about being injured and are quite happy sitting at home getting paid £50k a week - and sadly there is a fair few who are, but the majority hate it.

Anyway I dont think people are being too harsh, we are all allowed to mock a footballer carrying a bit of extra weight aren't we? Makes us feel better about our own beer bellys. (Not that I have one, I was thinking about Shaggy! )
Exactly. While we're laughing at fallen heros, does anyone have a link to the photo of Maradona in the shower with his incredibly small cock?

Fair play. I think that there has to be a certain amount of mental strength involved in maintaining a physicality appropriate for top-level football so in that respect I agree with you, though there does seem to be a problem amongst many of today's best players with regards to attitude.

As you say, I think Ronaldinho is guiltier than his older namesake considering all the stories of his arrogance and poor discipline and it utterly baffles me how a player can take their talent (and, essentially, responsibility to their club and its supporters) for granted like that.

of course - the money in the games is ridiculous - you have ****ing ******s who multi millionaires earning serious money playing for wank teams nowadays. Plus add to the fact you get 'slaves' like cristiano ronaldo

I'd agree with ronaldinho - maybe it's a cop out for ronaldo fans to say 'he suffered injures which have helped' but imo thats justified as he has suffered those injures right through his career. By all accounts ronaldinho has gone more off the boil than ronaldo without the injuries to justify it

This thread is like something from those gossip magazines.

The guy had a bad injury, hope he gets over it.

I don't think we're going to see Ronaldo on a football pitch again anytime soon.

Sad to see one of the great striker's career end like that.

OK he got injured, but still should not let himself go like that, the talent and potential he had was more than C.Ronaldo or Torres have right now.

Saddens me when people mention him and the topic of his weight etc are the first things people talk about. If he had stuck to his "regime" we could have been talking about him for his outstanding play.
I saw him play for Brazil at wembley in 1995, think he was only 18 but was the best player on the pitch by a mile, possibly one of the greatest players that I have ever seen, the lad had everything, even at Real after years of injuries he was still knocking in the goals. From reading Maccas book ronnie had a crazy life around him and it seems to have all caught up with him and made him take his eye off looking after himself. Poor lad has been struck by terrible injuries as well.

One of the most exciting, flamboyant and explosive footballers I've ever seen kick a football.

                                I loved watching him.
