      Rafa considered Owen signing

Rafa Benitez has revealed that he considered signing Michael Owen this summer but came to the conclusion that he would not command a regular first-team place.

The 29-year-old spent eight successful seasons at Anfield at the start of his career scoring 158 goals in all competitions.

However that has not stopped the striker from moving down the East Lancs Road to fiercest rivals Manchester United on a free transfer from Newcastle this summer.

Benitez admitted that he flirted with the idea of bringing the forward back to Liverpool but did not feel he would dislodge Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard up front.

"We had contact with different people and were analysing the situation," he told The People.

"But if you want to play Torres and Gerrard there is not always a lot of space for other players.

"When I brought back Robbie Fowler it was a different situation. We were looking for someone who could understand his role clearly and he was a good finisher.

"But we have a World Cup coming up and all the top players want to play. In his position it would be hard for Owen to play every week at Liverpool."

      Replacements

The Spaniard is also confident he already has enough squad depth at his disposal to cope with any injuries to his preferred front pairing.

"We are confident in (Dirk) Kuyt, (Ryan) Babel, (David) Ngog and (Andriy) Voronin for next season. We have players with quality," he added.

"People say I might need another striker but I remember signing Robbie Keane and everyone was saying good things.

"Then after I sold Robbie people were saying I was short of strikers but we scored more goals than anyone in the Premier League."

Yes, but it's no surprise is it, a couple of German clubs have shown interest but not been prepared to pay the asking price iirc, Rafa is just saying that he trusts Voronin to do a job and would be happy for him to play next season. Whether he truly believes it is another matter, but he's not going to say he's crap and i need to get rid though is he.

Sometimes managers have to say things they may get stick, or even be ridiculed for, but if in the long run it could be for the good of the club then they say it anyway.

I don't believe Voronin is crap, I feel he did at least equally well as Robbie Keane and he came for free. His versatility also means he is more useful than Robbie.
            * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

He is after all only a squad player, the top top players don't do sitting on the bench, so for the role he's going to be asked to play i would say he's adequate, however if his role becomes more important due to injuries to others then i'm not so sure.

                oh dear,

so the guy that basically failed at a weak Real Team and then failed at NU due to oversizing of bodyweight thus placing an undeterminable stress on his body weight relationship then became injury prone, who subsequently failed to keep fit at Newcastle, a team that failed to stay in the premier league

It All Sounds very Michael J to me

                Its all downhill from here

anyone who thinks that ths guy is going to spark a new wave is waiting for elsvis to come back...

It would allow them to pay of some debt.
And if they still make the Cl next season if could pay of long term.

But I still expect them to sign some big.

Goals. And I think he will get them as well. However, that will not be enough.

IMO their decline has well and truly begun and I just cannot see them winning the league next season, or anytime soon tbh.

This is a critical time for us because the mantle of being the No.1 team is up for grabs and if we can just win it next season I would back us to have a period of domination again.
