the problem is that someone will have to buy them and if it effects relegation etc there will be screams.

did you know they have made sales of 49M in the last nine months and 5 of the first team are loans

Regardless of who it effects I can see there being problems

Perhaps the only way around it I could think of would be for them to sell the players now, but they have to stay on loan until the end of the season, so no other club gains an advantage.

        Of that 49 million,
Johnson 18m - no money changed hands it cleared an outstanding debt
Kaboul 5m - no money changed hands it cleared an outstanding debt

No money changed hands on the Johnson deal, how do you figure that?

          Crouch cost £11m
          Johnson £17/18m

Say Pompey stumped up £3m upfront for the beanpole still leaves us paying around £10m for Johnson.

They can sell now but their debt will still cripple them. They have no propspects of turning it round without a sugar dadday, and they'll be in the championship. I think they'll be wound up on 1st march.

If they do then they'll be the first of 5 or 6 clubs this summer alone. Sad days for real football fans.

I see David Gold of West Ham want's to lend them the money, handy that, saves the Hammers losing 4 points if Pompey went under.

So messy. Conflict of interests there.

                        Laws blasts Pompey plans
Clarets chief calls on Premier League to stick to rules
                        Last updated: 19th February 2010

Burnley boss Brian Laws insists it would be "ridiculous" to allow relegation rivals Portsmouth to sell players outside the transfer window.

Cash-strapped Pompey have requested special dispensation to be able to move on players in a desperate attempt to raise funds to ease their crippling debts.

The Fratton Park outfit, seven points behind Burnley at the bottom of the Barclays Premier League, are facing a winding-up hearing at the High Court at the start of next month if they can not pay off a substantial tax bill.

A number of Premier League managers are against the unprecedented idea and although Laws can sympathise with the situation Portsmouth have found themselves in he is adamant that exceptions should not be made for one club.

"We all work within rules and regulations," said Laws

"That is the way the Football League or Premier League has worked for hundreds of years.

"Why should we have to change that for one particular club who are finding it very difficult with their finances?

                        Sympathy
"Whilst we have every sympathy with a football club that has difficulties, the only ones they should be looking at are themselves.

"They should be looking in a mirror to find the answer. They got themselves into it, (they should) get themselves out of it.

"I would hate to think the Premier League would allow them such a ridiculous thing beyond the transfer window.

"Allowing them to get a player out of the door, get some money and finances in, and then he goes and scores a goal against us that could be the goal that takes us down - that's ridiculous.

"I would think 100 per cent of the Premier League would be saying the same, so I don't think they would get much support from the Premier League clubs."

Even if they give Pompey permission to sell players, surely they'd also have to give permission to each team who wanted to buy a player?

Like I said before the only way I could see around this is if they were allowed to sell the players now but they were 'loaned' back to Portsmouth for the rest of the season. This way they wouldn't impact on other teams results. It's still not an ideal solution.

Aye. As much as I don't want to see any team go under, I can't disagree with Laws' assessment of the situation.

I think they will be wound up. There are too many conflicts of interests and bad precedents that will be set in order to save them. It sounds like they owe more to their former owners and to RC Lens, than what their assets are worth. Why put the ₤4 million needed into something that is not going to last? It's like putting a bandage on a knife wound.
