Which would leave the race for 4th looking like this:

    4th Liverpool P26 Pts 45
    5th Spurs P26 Pts 43
    6th Man City P25 Pts 40
    7th Villa P25 Pts 39

    How sweet would that be
wouldnt wish it on any club ( not even manure or neverton ) but it would help a lot.

I feel really bad for the large part of me that is hoping they go under so we can profit from it. It's a terrible thing and I don't really want them gone, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But more than anything else I care about us, and by God those points would help

Let them go into administration, its obvious they've managed to out do Leeds even in spending beyond their means.

It was plain obvious years ago that this would happen. You can't fund that level of investment when you get only 19,000 fans every other week and zero history.

Ludicrous all round, and those who say that you can't blame 'Arry - of course you can, anyone with a shred of intelligence could tell they were spending way beyond their meagre means.

This article suggests that they'll go into administration but will continue to exist and should play all their fixtures this season

            Portsmouth close to administration
Time running out for crisis-club Pompey to avoid administration
By Jonathan Witty Last updated: 23rd February 2010

Portsmouth owner Balram Chainrai has confirmed that the club will go into administration unless a new buyer is found by Friday.

The Hong Kong businessman and his fellow investors from the Portpin investment company are in talks with four different consortia about a takeover but admits it is "unlikely" a deal will be done this week.

With a winding up order due in the High Court on Monday, the decision has been taken to go into administration instead to save the club and ensure Pompey can fulfil their remaining fixtures this season.

Chainrai's spokesman Phil Hall said administration - which carries a nine-point penalty in the Premier League - would keep the club alive as the winding up order would be automatically suspended.

A statement read: "There is now only a short window of opportunity for buyers to come in with a credible offer. We have to be realistic and having the club wound up is not an option as far as we are concerned.

"They are the victims of circumstance, having injected funds in the form of a short-term loan to the Al Faraj Group, who subsequently invested the money in the club.

"The partners have put £17m of their own money into the club and have a responsibility to ensure Portsmouth Football Club survives.

"The serving of this notice means the winding-up order is automatically suspended. It means the club is safe, it can fulfil its fixtures and as far as is possible it is business as usual.

"Administration would mean the club re-emerging as a healthy financial entity. The club would then become an attractive proposition for a potential buyer who could invest new funds in rebuilding the club's future."

            Support
The statement continued: "We would like to ask the fans, the staff and management of Portsmouth Football Club for their support and patience should this step be taken, as they believe it is the only route left open to them.

"Mr Chainrai hopes the supporters will get fully behind the team as usual for their Premier League match at Burnley on Saturday and the following weekend's FA Cup quarter-final at home to Birmingham.

"Mr Chainrai has agreed to continue funding the club going forward until its long-term future is decided. He will also pay for the administration process out of his own pocket."

Reading my mind there, exactly the same thoughts.

Would it be better for them to stay in business until after we play them? Or better for them to go bust before?

We'd presumably beat them at Anfield (you'd ****ing hope so anyway!) but if they go under, we'd just lose those 3 points anyway, so i'd rather we didnt have to play the game. Plus it'd save the fans money too, as well as being one less game for Nando to get injured in again

Just read that skysports article - how on earth can the winding up order be suspended, just because they'll go into admin? They'll still owe loads and have no means of paying it

They wont owe an awful lot 5/10pence per £ if the creditors are lucky........It's a joke

Applying for voluntary administration doesn't automatically mean they will get it. The judge will consider whether there is a possibility of them continuing as a going concern. That's why potential buyers have been in the press this week , to make convincing the judge easier. It will probably work I would think.

Also, the current owner has pledge to fund them to keep them afloat. Liquidation isn't going to happen so we're just going to have to up our game unfortunately.

How 'sweet' would that be? For me it would leave a very bitter taste indeed. It makes me sick that the holy grail of 4th is so big for some they'd wish another club out of business. ****ing hell if we can't get enough points to finish 4th without help then we don't deserve it. Plain as.

Craig, if your preferred outcome does indeed come to be, how would you celebrate this magnificent 4th place by default? bottle of champers at your local? hell get a case of the stuff.

How ironic if UEFA bought forward their idea that you have to be in the black to compete in the CL. We qualify by default and then get turned away due to our own financial woes.

Uefa wont bring in any rule that keeps Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and others, out of the CL.

Perhaps they should take 4th place qualification away altogether or just let the top 10 in. We'd all be happy then.

Why are you being arsey about it, just out of interest?

You have your opinion, i have mine. Let it go.

                                1) because I'm in an arsey mood.
                                2) I'm sick of how the premier league is all about a battle for the 4th qualifying spot for the ****ing 'anything but champions' league instead of winning the damn thing. Let the top 10 in and relegate the other 10 to the Championship, thus keeping players fresh, performance levels higher, national coaches would have no excuses and we could all relax and enjoy the beautiful game again.
                                3) because i'm in an arsey mood
