Pepe Reina waiting for the Barcelona call
Eleven years after he left, former product of La Masia and Barcelona goalkeeper, Pepe Reina could soon be back to where it all started for him.
Victor Valdes has made it clear that he wants to leave the Camp Nou and although he has made no comment about his future, he would be more than happy to listen to offers from the Premiership for his services (Arsenal and Liverpool mostly). Tito Vilanova wants him to stay till the end of his contract next season but the board would be happy to sell him. Consequently the Catalan club is now setting its sights on bringing the 30-year-old Spanish international back into the fold on a two year deal that would serve as a transition period before the establishment of a new keeper, with or without Valdes still at the club
Reina is more than keen to rejoin the club the club that loaned him out and then sold him to Villarreal in 2002 and I understand that Liverpool, as long as a fee can be agreed, will not stand in his way. All that is left to do is for Barcelona to follow with that offer but Pepe knows he is the favourite goalkeeper to join them this summer.
Sold by Villarreal to Liverpool in 2005 he has been an ever present in the Premiership since the start of the 2007/08 season and holds the record for the Spanish player with the most appearances, - more than 200 in five seasons. He is also considered to be Iker Casillas’s deputy for Spain alongside Valdes and has played for his country at every level including 26 times for the full national side and was part of the squads that won the World Cup in 2010 and the European championships in 2008 and 2012.
So Reina and Liverpool are now waiting for the Barcelona call.
