Portsmouth have sold Kevin-Prince Boateng to Genoa for a fee believed to be around £5m, with the Italian club instantly loaning him to AC Milan.
The 23-year-old will spend the season with the Rossoneri, who already have a deal in place to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.
Boateng, who helped Ghana reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup, joined Pompey from Tottenham last August.
The midfielder scored five times in 27 appearances for the south coast club.
Germany-born Boateng, who scored a penalty in Portsmouth's FA Cup semi-final win over Spurs before missing one in the final against Chelsea, was one of a number of players Pompey targeted to sell this summer to help fund their bid to exit administration.
Pompey chief executive David Lampitt said: "We wish Kevin all the best. He played an important role last season and we thank him for that."
Genoa president Enrico Preziosi told Corriere dello Sport that he did not expect Boateng to play for his club.
"Genoa were following Boateng before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa," he said. "It was a good shop window for him, but one cannot rely on a World Cup alone.
"Milan have an unusual situation, as they have many players in the last year of their contracts and are keeping an eye on the balance sheet.
"Instead we had more of an opportunity to move for Boateng. For now he is joining the Rossoneri on loan.
"Will he return to Genoa? He could do, but in a way I hope he doesn't. If Milan buy him outright then it'll mean we both saw this is a great player and Genoa will have made a healthy profit."
Milan will maybe buy him for 7 million in the summer with a lump of cash going to the president of Genoa for his bit?
