I don't think the team winning/competing was the primary goal of Hicks and Gillett. You only have to look at Hicks's stewardship (as in control rather than taking care or responsibility) of the Texas Rangers to see he does not see long-term on the pitch success as crucial for meeting his business objectives. Just as with the Rangers, he was perfectly happy to f*ck the club completely if it suited his financial needs.
Moores's heart was probably in the right place (let's not get into the almighty f*ck up and coincidental fortune he made when divesting himself of his shares) but he was using an outdated model, one that he had inherited. Although to be honest I'm not sure it should really be regarded as a business model, more a way of doing things because that's how they were done before. That's not a strategy, it's a museum.
We're now run by serious people who have worthwhile objectives, a credible and sustainable strategy and innovative ideas for getting us there. They aren't the only good owners out there but we could be a lot worse off.
