But while play is going on and ref doesnt have a replay, Id say it was a red. When I saw it I said red card straigjt away. It looks bad. The only mitigation seems to be that he didnt make much contact. Its kind of irrelevant for me. Just because he missed, doesnt make it less of an offence.

Yeah, I'm less completely convinced on repeat viewing but in real time it looked clear as day to me. I tend to agree with sarb it is a very difficult one to call.

Maybe a bit harsh but he can't really complain about getting the red, well obviously he can. Flores should get three games too.

Was also convinced because Howard Webb was the ref, the FA would not want to overrule their supposed 'senior' ref.

But point is Carroll didnt intentionally miss hitting him in the face. He definitely swings his arm looking to make contact. Just because he missed doesnt mean he should not see red.

On another note, heard a few people say should use video replays for red cards during games. You could show that incident to 10'refs and I reckon they would be split 50:50

Florez also takes a deliberate swing at Carroll with his left arm at the same time so it would appear there is a case for sending him off also.

I think it's a difficult one to be honest, because there's hardly minimal contact with the arm and Chico Flores certainly makes the most of it. But if the referee considers the 'throwing' him to the floor and the swing of the arm it is easy to see that as being aggressive. I think the ruling has been upheld because that was the referees interpretation of it at the time and on review that doesn't really change, even if the contact is less than previously thought there.
