Newcastle realised we were desperate to sign Carroll with it being deadline day and said they wanted more. We decided that we wanted £15m plus Carroll based on initial valuations, kept going back to Chelsea as Newcastle demanded more and more for Carroll, and eventually Chelsea paid us £50m for Torres. Very odd circumstances, that led to both Torres and Carroll being saddled with inflated fees that the press could use to beat them with.
