Liverpool agree fee of £6m for midfielder Jonjo Shelvey with Swansea City

Swansea City have agreed a £6 million fee with Liverpool for midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

The 21-year-old now looks set to move to Wales in pursuit of more regular football.

A deal could go through by the weekend, recouping further funds for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Shelvey was a regular starter early last season but featured far less after January, particularly as Jordan Henderson regained some form.

A member of the England Under 21 squad and former Arsenal and West Ham trainee, Shelvey joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2010 and was called up by Roy Hodgson for full international honours last season.

Michael Laudrup has now identified his potential as he seeks to build on his excellent first season at The Liberty Stadium.

With Liverpool returning to pre-season on Tuesday, it was made clear to Shelvey the club would not stand in his way if the right bid came in offering an opportunity to develop his career elsewhere.

Norwich and Crystal Palace have also shown interest in the midfielder whose opportunities at Anfield are sure to be affected by the recent arrival of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto from La Liga.

The lack of European football at Anfield this season means, barring injuries, only the League Cup offers an obvious starting opportunity for fringe players and even that competition will be taken more seriously by Rodgers this year given fewer early season commitments.

Swansea, in contrast, are in Europe and need to enhance their squad numbers.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins confirmed Shelvey was a target.

"There is an interest there and we are talking to Liverpool," he said.

        We must be getting Henrikh.

He could do well at Swansea.

I think there is a decent player in him and he might show what he can do if he gets a run in their team.

Good luck to him (apart from when he plays us of course)

£6m is a decent fee. I think he'll make a good player somewhere and personally would've loaned him for a season. But getting these funds in is pretty handy so I'm all for it. He's a very instinctive/impetuous player which makes him erratic, and maybe doesn't wholly suit the way Brendan wants us to play.

Factor in the £2.8m from the Ince deal and that's near on £9m raised today.

                Carroll: £15.5m
                Shelvey: £6m

                £21.5m

I make it about £23.7m spent (Mignolet £9m, Aspas £7.7m, Luis Alberto £7m, Kolo free)

                So we've spent **** all.

If it was the other way round (Shelvey signing for us from Swansea) we'd be paying double that for a young English player.

I hope we have included a sell on clause because i think he'll develop in to a quality player.
                  We come not to play.

Fair point - been in England squads, Prem experience, only 21, English 'tax' etc....you do wonder if certain other clubs would've got more for him. Still think it's decent though and handy given we want to buy better players.

Also think he will become a very good Prem player.

6m is very tempting and I'd take it but personally I'd still insert a buyback clause.

He needs regular football which is what we cannot give him.

He is immature but talented and given his age and potential there is a still chance that he can turn into a very decent footballer.

£6m is a decent fee. Probably more than I expected us to get.

I think he could develop into a really good player. Really looked mustard at Charlton and when he first joined us but I don't think he's quite at the level we need.

He'll go on to have a good career in the PL though.

I think he gets to much stick simply cause he was a Hodgson signing.
                            Pardon?

The buy-out clause would be ideal but Swansea would have to be stupid to do so. And i don't think their chairman is.

6mil is too good to turn down. Shelveys career could really go either way at this stage and they are offering us a chance to more than triple our money?

To still make that sort of profit on a player who we would barely use is excellant.

Nooooo best of luck Jonjo, my new favorite non-LFC player. I hope we have some sort of a buy-back clause.
