Huw Jenkins admits Swansea are interested in signing Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool

    Last Updated: July 2, 2013 8:45am

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admits the club have started talks with Liverpool in a bid to sign Jonjo Shelvey.

The England U21 midfielder is valued at around £5m by Liverpool and is the third player to be linked with a move to the Liberty stadium in the last week.

"There is an interest there and we are talking to Liverpool," Swansea chairman Jenkins said.

Vitesse Arnhem forward Wilfried Bony and Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis have also been attracting interest from Swansea.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that Jenkins had been in France for talks over Gomis on Monday, and that Swansea had offered the player a pay rise.

The France international has a year to run on his Lyon contract and does not have to leave even though the club are keen to move him on.

Gomis is apparently attracting interest from the likes of Cardiff, Fiorentina and Shakhtar Donetsk.

"We are still talking on a number of fronts to try to get the right players on the right deals for Swansea City," Jenkins added.

"There have been continual conversations on Bafetimbi Gomis because he has been one of our main targets.

"The fact is that there are quite a lot of things which need to be sorted out at Lyon's end which are out of our control.

"We have kept the door open on that one. Similarly with Wilfried Bony, we are waiting for information.

"We are waiting for news back from his club - we are still talking to them."

£10m for Jonjo, Weejay and Ince would be decent.

no issues with this transfer if it goes through.

whilst i've always backed shelvey - i felt he was young raw talent - ultimately at the moment for us he is a bit of a passenger, he doesn't or hasn't contributed enough on the pitch during his time even when you take in his young age to consideration.

ideal world would have been a loan situation where we get to see him develop - but if the cash is there, £5m, then take it.

If we can pull of Mkhirtaryaian - then him/gerrard/lucas/henderson/allen plus Luis Alberto and Coutinho (even suso if we look a little further) are capable of performing the attacking mid role - Shelvey is really struggling to get a look.

add to that i'm still hopeful that we go and buy a Wanayama type centre mid,

He can have no completes either for me shelvey - yes he is young and yes i do feel there is something there - but for all his swagger, he has been here 3 seasons (incl his loan spell with blackpool in the championship) and he has made 70 first team appearances.

Out of those 70 games, i can't think of many stand out performances.
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Happy to sell him for anything over £5m, I think it will work best for all parties concerned. He just doesn't suit our style and isn't quite good enough for a huge club like ours.

Shame, if he had a bit of pace and could tackle I think he'd be a top, top player.

Oh, and play football maybe of help too

No Seriously, good lad, has the qualities to be a good player but, IMO, not a top quality player good enough for us

I hope we put a clause in his contract that IF he does become a top player, we can buy him back cheap or, have a sell on fee like the Ince deal

A bit of contridiction to start the day off

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed the club are in talks to sign Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
The England Under-21 international has made only 17 league starts for Liverpool since moving from Charlton Athletic in May 2010.
A number of clubs are believed to be interested in the 21-year-old, who has won one full cap for England.
"There is an interest there and we are talking to Liverpool," Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post.
Swansea have already recruited defender Jordi Amat from Espanyol for £2.5m and midfielder Jose Canas from Real Betis on a free trasfer.

Dutch midfielder Jonathan de Guzman has returned to the Liberty Stadium on a second season-long loan from Spanish club Villarreal.
The Swans are also in the running to sign 24-year-old Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnhem.
And Jenkins confirmed the club are working on a number of other recruits including French international Bafetimbi Gomis from Lyon.
"We are still talking on a number of fronts to try to get the right players on the right deals for Swansea City," Jenkins added.
"There have been continual conversations on Bafetimbi Gomis because he has been one of our main targets.

Shelvey's talents were blown epically out of proportion whilst at LFC, he's an average footballer.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

He's a full international now that should add a couple of million

If we let him go for £5m we need to make sure we include a load of add ons, sell on fee, option to buy back for a fixed price, bonuses when he makes a certain number of appearances, scores so many goals, gets so many international caps.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Swansea City agree £6m fee for Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey

                                • Swansea beat Crystal Palace, West Ham and Norwich to midfielder

Swansea City have agreed a £6m fee with Liverpool for the England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and will discuss personal terms with the player in anticipation of concluding a deal before the weekend.

The 21-year-old, a £1.7m signing from Charlton three years ago, has been limited to a peripheral role at Anfield and had been told by Brendan Rodgers that his situation may not improve and he can leave in search of regular first-team football.

Liverpool fielded interest from newly-promoted Crystal Palace, together with West Ham and Norwich, but Swansea's bid was deemed acceptable.

Shelvey, who made his senior England debut in November's defeat in Sweden, only made 17 Premier League starts over his time at Anfield but is expected to seize the chance to move to the Welsh club, with the added incentive of Europa League football, to kickstart his top-flight career.

Swansea announced three signings on Tuesday, most notably the midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo from Real Betis for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old, who made 11 senior appearances for Betis last season, becomes Swansea's seventh Spanish player.

The 17-year-old goalkeeper Gregor Zabret and 19-year-old midfielder Alex Gogic also joined on Tuesday from the Slovenian side NK Domzale and the Greek club Olympiakos respectively.
