Remember being mocked for saying a few years ago how good Shelvey will become.

He's very good and he's only going to get better. Class.

        A fair point.

We were wondering a year ago why he's nowhere near the Spainish squad.

I think Shelvey shows all the signs of a top player. He may not be as athletic as Gerrard, but he does have a similar eye for a pass (or a hollywood pass).

Gerrard at 20 was obviously going to be one of the best players of his generation, he was simply immense, if just lacking a touch of discipline. Shelvey really has come on a great deal but he is not at the level Gerrard was, and will not reach it either imo. Which isn't really a criticism, very few players in the world could aspire to be as good as Gerrard at his peak, but we shouldn't be comparing the two.

There is a perfectly valid argument as to which one should be in the starting XI at the moment however.

****s me off even more that we came so close to the title then it all went tits up. Wasted some good years of Gerrard's career there.

I wonder how he would have handled himself for a Spanish or Italian club?

DannyP, do you often find yourself using expressions in your posts that you've never used before? It really wouldn't surprise me. Your posting style is, erm, quite distinctive.

I used to voice concerns about Shelvey's athleticism and pace, or lack of it, but he seems to have ironed that out a little. Re Gerrard....he was obviously going to be a great player but if you remember he was ungainly at the start. He was obviously still growing, and in games like Celta Vigo, Sheff Wednesday (when he scored that cracking solo goal, as did little Davey Thommo ) you could see he loads of developing to do physically.

I think Shelvey is at that point now, developing physically and athletically. He still sort of lollops along but that's just his strange gait. He definitely has "it". Loved my Spurs mate goading me by text again last night, when Shelvey came on. "Here comes that clumsy oaf who'll be shipped out to West Brom in 18 months for £2m". He's so wrong...it's a beautiful thing.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I also think there is a good chance that Shelvey might fit more naturally into different ways of playing. For a lot of his career Gerrard has made teams be built around him/to suit him and I don't think that has always been for the best of the team in the long run.

Was gonna make a similar point. Shelvey will never be a better player, but he might be a better CM player for us.

                            I love him.

Good performance last night, but lets not get carried away, he's no Jake Livermore.
