I don't think the ref could give it to be honest. It's a clear penalty only on specific replays the ref has to err on the side of caution.Originally posted by dom9 View PostThanks.
I never saw that blown up close up before. Evans did not get the ball.
When seeing the normal replay during the game (i.e. not magnified in super slo-mo), to me it looked like a legit challenge.
In terms of the Shelvey decision I think it was far and away not the only uncontrolled challenge. Actually just after the Suarez penalty shout Scholes flies in from behind on a player. Not sure how controlled it was but his later tackle (for which he was booked) looked similar to me and no different an offence to the Shelvey card."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

He somehow felt able to give the Valencia one though yet it's not a clear penalty in any replay I've seen.Originally posted by dww View PostI don't think the ref could give it to be honest. It's a clear penalty only on specific replays the ref has to err on the side of caution..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Agree - that is a massive mistake. Although a lot of people in the pub we watched the game in seemed to think it was a penalty at first. One has to accept there are limits to judgement. Personally I think referees (and pundits) tend to give to much weight to whether or not the ball deviates after a tackle.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostHe somehow felt able to give the Valencia one though yet it's not a clear penalty in any replay I've seen."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I agree. Of course there are limits to judgment and we have to expect referees to get decisions wrong (including, as Alex suggested, the seeming non-decisions, the ones they, so to speak, don't make). What is galling is when they are so persistently in favour of one side.Originally posted by dww View PostAgree - that is a massive mistake. We both know one game proves nothing of course. It's perfectly within the boebal bounds of random variation that Halsey happened to give all the notable decisions to Man United yesterday. But, while I'm willing to acknowledge I'm making an assumption, I still contend that Man United get far too many favourable decisions (and non-decisions) over the course of many seasons.
I bet you can find the relevant analysis on some site like footballnerdiness.com or analyticaloverloadremovingjoyfromsport.co.uk or somewhere.

I think in some ways the questions are what is it that we are trying punish and why. I was under the impression that the aim was to protect players by preventing tackles that cannot be controlled by those making them and might result in injuries. As such I think any sliding tackle (with both feet of the ground even if not involved in the impact) which is into rather than across a player should be dealt with in a similar way.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostI don't think that one was a red tbh.
