Referees demand apology from Ferguson after United boss' Atkinson attack

Referees are demanding a public apology from Sir Alex Ferguson for an apparent slur on the integrity of Martin Atkinson.

Last night the referees’ union weighed into the row as the FA deliberate on whether tocharge the Manchester United boss over his comments following his side’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Alan Leighton, whose union Prospect is engaged to represent match officials, said: ‘The ball is in Sir Alex’s court. I’m less interested in whether he’s charged than removing this stigma from the referee at Stamford Bridge.

'The referees are saying that if one is questioned then it questions them all. None of them want their integrity impaired. So the best way would be a retraction.’

The FA have until 4pm on Friday to decide whether to press charges, a move which
would activate an extended touchline ban as he still has a two match suspension
hanging over him for his attack on Alan Wiley in November 2009.

The FA have requested video footage from MUTV of a post-match interview in which
Ferguson said: ‘It was a major game for both clubs and you want a fair referee. When I saw who was refereeing it, I feared the worst.’

Is he allowed to do this every week then as long as he offers a muffled retraction afterwards?

"Less interested in whether he's charged"- says it all really.
          3rd place. Worst champions ever.

So they will just let him off with a retraction (which he clearly won't mean) and no punishment?

I cant wait for this horrible odious little gob****e they call a knight to **** off out off football for good. Yes he is a great manager but is the biggest gob****e in english football who has too much influence due to his status and his mates in the good old ****ing boys club of english football.

I cant wait for kenny to get up a running after the summer and knock this bacon faced prick off his ****ing perch.

Nope, that one won't stick with Comic relief coming up, even though the shade of colour is a touch off.

He will get nothing more than a £10k fine and be sent on his way. Our game needs cleaning up big time. From the stupid wages paid to the imps who kick the ball all the way to the FA.

IMO the members of the FA should be voted in by the public.

They just can't give him only a fine because of the two game suspended sentence he got after the Wiley affair.

The minimum sentence is a two game ban if he is found guilty. Could be longer if he gets more games added because of this charge.
