I've read the article (today and when it came out).

I think in a lot of ways your experience shows how important it is to deal with what people think of as harmless banter as well as more sinister abuse. People get normalised to things and fail to recognise the damage that can be done to people.

You would hope Robbie would have also grown up enough to realise he was out of order but apparently not.
I was 12 years old when this happened and I shamefully found it funny and remember doing that to people when we played footy in games. I look back and cringe at my actions. Robbie was my idol and I loved him, I remember people used to try to wind me up saying he was a coke head and it used to really piss me off, much to the others amusement.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

If the Fowler incident took place in the modern game, the whole country would go ballistic.

You can get away with sweet f-a in footie these days. Still think Rooney getting a 2 game suspension for swearing was ridiculous tbh.

No the Rooney thing was worse for me, he deserves at least 7-10 game ban. He swore directly at little kids watching the game on a saturday lunch time. What Fowler did was bad and he deserved a 6 game ban for that and no suspension for the goal celebration.

It's a fine line. But in this instance, the guy was plagued by this his whole career. Fowler could be seen as legitimising that 'banter', which is kinda how I saw it at the time.
                      Oh I don't know.

it's very disrespectful both to le saux and to gay people. as a means of getting under someone's skin, it should be beneath anyone.

I thoroughly read this thread and all the comments, then I came into this post, and cracked up for a few good minutes. Thank you, sir.

You're using homosexuality as an insult, you're implying homosexuality is a bad thing to be ashamed of, so yes, it is definitely homophobic behavior.

I remember at the time getting a bit of stick from fellow Reds on the forums for saying good on Le Saux for giving Fowler a smack for that.
