His arrival would make Downing seem a much better signing. I hate the idea that it's one or the other and Downing is the preferred target. There's room for both in the squad and if they both came our front six (or so) would have to be permed from this lot (as things stand):

Amazing depth and quality there. I cannot get my head around people wanting to see the back of Meireles and Aquilani. Two experienced international players, both have quality, and they make the squad a damn sight stronger. The Mancs, Arsenal et al have had a similar amount of players to choose from for years. Spurs have even more options. The minute we look like assembling a squad of serious depth and quality, there's talk of shipping some out.

Unless either of them are unhappy, surely we have to keep both.

Same here. I really hope that we have enough funds and can attract both players to join us.

If we could also get some decent quality LB I'd really fancy our chances for top 4 next season.

As for LFC, all I know is they have serious interest, have talked to his reps but as said previously, no idea if there'll be a formal bid.

This could be the pivotal moment for next season, it really could. If we let Mata slip into Arsenals clutches it will be a big boost for them and a blow for us IMO. We need them to carry on imploding as they are because they are going to be the team we will need to displace from the top 4 next season.

Call me mental but I think for next season only that Downing would have more effect at Liverpool than Mata would have at Arsenal*
