Where would Mata fit into the Spurs set up?

Spurs are just covering their backs here, in the event of Modric getting off..

He could either play the same role Modric has been playing or he could play the van der Vaart role when he can't be bothered.

Mata is one transfer that IMO would be worth pushing the boat and paying a wee bit over the odds to get. Personally it would sit much better with me paying over the odds for Mata, than Stuart Downing.

It would definitely be a statement of intent. But we've missed out of several targets already, wouldn't be a surprise if this one was the same as.

Buying any player for 20m is a statement of intent. I rate Mata and think he is a fantastic prospect but in the cold light of day Downing is premiership proven almost guaranteed to do well and provide genuine width.

Mata is Potentially world class, likes to cut in and in Suarez we have a player who drifts to the left and cuts in.

In an ideal world we could do with both.

I hear ya mate but 1 good season in 4 years isn't exactly proven to do well, it's inconsistent and hit & miss. He has some good attributes i.e. crossing but IMO is certainly not the answer to our problems & spending anything over 12-14 million for him is not a statement of intent, it's more of a statement of retardation IMO.

I agree with what you say about Mata. But I also think Downing represents a better chance of getting top 4.....although once we are there we should **** downing off and get real quality!!

The problem as i see it is our squad is not strong enough to buy failures and gambles such as Jova, Cole, Morientes, Diouff etc........If Mata comes and doesnt settle, well we are back to palying 2 kop flops in Jova and Cole on the left and that leaves us ****e again.

Buying a relatively injury free drowning represents a massive increase of quality from our left hand side, comfortable with both feet and delivers a great ball.........

Obviously Kenny knows so much more about footie than all of us, and we really don't know who are our primary targets, who has refused us,smokescreens etc but IMHO Downing is not the answer, i don't feel he is the answer to the LM debacle and i don't feel he is the answer for getting us back into the top 4. But i do understand that he represents a lower risk from teh point of view of adapting to the rigors of the league than say Mata. But he is not coming at a cheap price, he has never really turned heads, decent season last year but nothing special & he is 4 years older than Mata & IMO doesn't have the scope Mata, nor is he as talented

Obviously it's all about opinions and each to their own, that's perfectly fine i completely respect that. If Downing signs, which i'm sure he will i won't be happy about it, but i'll be praying he proves wrong, me and many others that doubt him. I will be very happy to have egg on my face if Downing turns out to be a success, but in all honesty i can't see him being anymore than a run of the mill, so so player & a waste of our funds and a wage drain. Negative i know, but just how i feel mate.

Kenny, Comolli and Clarke all people who should know the premiership inside out. I dont think Downing will take us to next level and ,aybe we dont need a head turner.. Riera proved how decent a steady eddie could e in that position.

If we want a statement of Intent of how serious we are, we should buy both as they play different postions anyway really.

I just think out of the 2 for next year I would take Downing, But without a doubt Mata will become and in fact allready is a far superior player, just has a different set of attributes and question marks against him
