Rumour was Rafa was given constraints as to under what circumstances we could make any substantial signings, one of which was we could do business with clubs that owed us money so in terms of spending the can was kicked down the road. How true that was is anyone's guess, but it certainly fits with the transfers we made in that period.

No doubt a terrible signing but we bought from Roma and Portsmouth that summer - both clubs that allegedly still owed us money.

Thats exactly what I heard. Might be bull**** but it explains why rafa bought someone who had hardly played any football in the two or three years before signing him.

Just didnt make any sense whatsoever to sign a crock unless he had no other choice.
