If he hadn't owned Chelsea then he would probably not been allowed to even live in England. How much money do you think he earns because of that. Of course the owner of Anzhi do it to boost his profile but he won't more or less have any use of it in other business deals because he still live in Dagestan.

The number one reason IMO to why Roman bought Chelsea was because he had to get out of Russia. Buying Chelsea allowed him moving to London.

He had to get out of Russia to be able to make business deals without the Russian Government interfering a lot.

I agree he wanted to funnel his wealth out of Russia and having a high profile in a country like Britain makes it much harder for the Kremlin to treat him like they did Khordorkovsky. It probably also makes it easier for him to do business inside the EU, the USA, etc.

The Anzhi bloke reminds me of how Berlusconi treated Milan, as a way to win popular support. It's also reminiscent of a Mafia don handing out favours.
