I dont think he does on that performance at all, Sunderland are a tighter more compact unit and Youngs goal was spawny as ****. Downing could have had a goal on another day.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostI know i'll get slated for this, but Ashley Young looks a far more dangerous player than Downing.
Young has speed, |Downing has a better delivery. Young is also a bit of a headless chicken.
Downing looked **** in the second half but so did all our team.
I am quite confident that Downing will add more to our team, than Young wil to Scums._____________________________________

FFS, wish people would actually read what i post.Originally posted by Bender View Postwell clearly you don't think he's any good
I think he is good, but he's not top quality and he wont be a game-changer/matchwinner on a regular basis for us.
And one other question - if i dont think a player is any good, does that mean i hate him?

All opinions welcomeOriginally posted by Craig_H View PostIt's called an opinion bender. It's all any of us can offer, nobody 'knows' the future.
But it's an opinion of having watched a player for a number of years. Do you not form opinions of players?
And the 'hate' thing is ridiculous.
.....do i form opinions yes all chav and scum players

I think Young is flattered by the formation and by his own discipline in staying out left. Having Rooney in the hole helpsTREMENDOUSLY; positional discipline is the key to United. The players don't panic and start changing and improvising; Nani stayed on the right and Young stayed on the left, Rooney played the #10 role in the hole and they stuck to the proper shape.
By contrast, we had no one in the #10 playmaking midfield role and Downing, once Suarez left, was asked (I hope) to roam; he abandoned the left wing, we lost our shape, he and Dirk started switching until Miereles came on and then RM went out left, etc etc. It was, in my opinion, a mistake for our team not to have Aquilani in the hole once Suarez went off; Downing had a very good first half and put a brilliant shot off the bar, but once we took out Suarez and Henderson, the team was pissing in the wind.
This is the difference between United and us, IMO. There, everyone plays their part and the chances are spread around the team depending on where the balls and passes land. With us, without Suarez and, frankly, Gerrard, we're chasing formations, trying to be fluid, but players drift in and out of position and we just look confused, especially with so many new boys figuring one another out.
Anyway, if Liverpool can simply swap players into the system and have positional and systemic discipline like United does, we'll be flying. Downing should LIVE on the left. It is his, he owns it, he should stay there, interchange if necessary when a situation calls for it, but get back to his position asap."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr

I disagree. last season he was player of the year for Villa and imo impressed more than Young.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostIt's fairly straightforward english mate.
Downing wont consistently make the difference, whereas Young will do so, far more often IMO.
Even this week I thought he had a better game overall than Ashley just was less fortunate.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

I dont doubt that, but what they did last season for Villa is of no consequence to us this season, when i think Young will be far more dangerous for them than Downing will be for us.
He'll create more and have a greater impact on them winning games, than Downing does on us winning games.
IMO, before people state the obvious fact that i cant tell the future.

I can see why they were compared when they were at Villa but I don't see the point of it now..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Young was about a yard onside as well, left centre back playing him well on. There's more passion in utd threads than Liverpool ones. For the record:

United
Arsenal
-----Big Gap------
Chelsea

Liverpool
Everton

You could put it down to that, i suppose.Originally posted by Mostar View PostI disagree. last season he was player of the year for Villa and imo impressed more than Young.

From what i saw though, when we needed something to find a winner, Downing was anonymous. When they needed a winner, Young was directly instrumental in them getting it.
It was only one game, of course. I predict that it wont be a one-off occurance throughout the season though.
