He did pretty well vs Olympiacos too

Assuming Agger does leave then who's your 4th Mos?

For me it's Toure or Coates. I'd keep Coates to be honest.
We now have 4 decent CBs, no room for Kolo or Coates, if we need a 5th or 6th, use the reserves, save the wages.

Yeah not bad either I guess.

I think I saw him connect many passes straight up field vs City where he just defends (Kicks it away) against Olympiakos. He is connecting a lot of good passes in the City clip.

More composed and productive display against City and I think that will be key for him if he gets to stay. He must believe he can actually play football - even if feels uncomfortable doing so...Impressive to see how much BR can change a player in terms of natural style and what he needs to bring in reality.

if agger is going [likely imho] and we dont bring in another central defender [unlikely] then its either coates or ilori as 4th CB.

coates might have developed a bit more man strength since the WC and now he has stopped doing bongs [still needs to get rid of the stoner bumfluff] so he might be the one to make up the numbers. ilori might be the better longer term option so might need more game time so another loan for him.

kolo, just no. he looked fairly good when he first came in, but he dropped of a cliff.

i would like to keep Coates. If we don't then i have a feeling that he will go on to be a top class operator in someone elses team..... he would be class in italian football where things are 5% slower....

In Sakho, Lovern, Agger and Skrtel, then we have 4 centre backs. However i cannot see Skrtel or Agger hanging around too long if they are not in the team every week. I would have Coates before Toure at this stage so with cup competitions, injuries and rotation, Coates should stay for one more season at least and see if he can force his way in.

Ilori and Wisdom should be knocking on the door in 12 months or so - so it should be one more roll of the dice for Coates.

Reading this whole thread though, i think Martin Kelly is finished....

I haven't read all the posts but I don't think he's done that great. He could have dealt with both City goals the other day but didn't.

              1. Stops running because he thinks Gerrard will deal with it
              2. Sold himself.

Coates is no where near good enough for our backline

How do you know? He has hardly had a chance and his international record suggests he does deserve an opportunity to prove himself before he is written off. He might need to prove himself on loan to another PL club rather than in our first team but it would be wrong to give up on him already.

He would be crucified in the premier league, he's ok technically & good in the air.. but he is painfully slow, awkward & a bit too docile for the physicality of the league.

Each to their own opinion, some players are suited to the premier league & some aren't, IMO Coates is not

if he was in our team you would always be wondering when the next mistake was coming, similar to kolo really.
a loan in the prem might toughen him up mentally and physically a bit.

Rodgers explained: "He has done very well over pre-season. He's a player that played in the team when I first came into the club.

"He played in some of the league and European games then was out of the team. He was very unfortunate to have a bad injury that put him out for a while.

"He's done really, really well in pre-season. He's a big boy, but he can play football - he has a lovely touch, lovely technique, can pass the ball and can be aggressive.

"He's been at the club for a few years, so I think the question for Sebastian will be whether he is going to get enough games that will satisfy his own personal need, because he's a talent - there's no question about that.

"He's a real good guy as well, a humble man, he never cries about not playing. He accepts as a professional that he's not going to play in every game.

"But he has worked hard at training to get fit after his injury last season and he now looks fit. He has done well in the games and we'll see what the rest of the summer holds."

Epic non committal answer from Rodgers about Coates

First full game of the tour I've watched, but was very impressed with him last night.

I think he's been very solid to be honest. A little rash at times but with a bit of game time I think he'd cut that out.

He's a good passer too apart from the odd long ball he does.

My only real gripe with him is that when he does something, for a second he just stops and switches off, which could be very dangerous.
