Every clip i've seen of the Arsenal game last night involved the ball being played in behind the 2 centre backs and Mertesacker slowly jogging back, can't see him being any kind of solution to their defensive problems

Yeah he looked horrendous - only saw Dortmund's chances but I was laughing out loud at how confused and bewildered Mertesacker looked. Especially amusing given playing Dortmund isn't exactly a new experience for the big lamppost.

He is building from the back the way you should do it. Mancini did the same at City and Rafa did the same when he was our manager.

City is now one of the best attacking teams in the world.

Hodgson do it only because he don't have a clue how to play attacking football. AVB, Mancini and Rafa do/did it because it is the safest way to build up a good attacking system.
