You have racism born out of ignorance - eg Ron Atkinson. I dont think Atkinson said what he said about Gallas, out of malice or hatred - i think he's just from a generation where they DID say those things and it was never considered wrong. He was brought up that way and just continues to live like he's still in the old days, but is doing so in today's modern society. He's 'racist' because he doesnt know any different, he's ignorant to why it's wrong.

Then you have people whose racism is born out of hatred and malice. Again, the core reason for this is down to ignorance, by virtue of the fact that they hold beliefs due to not having been taught the realities of life. But unlike people like Atkinson, this type of racism is fuelled by hatred.

Ron Atkinson is 'racist' due to his upbringing and living through a time where society didnt recognise the wrongdoing of it all. I dont think he has a problem with, for example, black people - he just uses a term he grew up being told was ok.

John Terry seems to actually hold hateful feelings based on race.

That's how i see it anyway. 'Ignorant racism' and 'hate-filled racism'.

Of course, the two are linked and sometimes both are present in the same person.
Although both are repugnant, racism from ignorant hatred is easier to stamp our and educate away from than racism from measured hatred.

The Ron Atkinson thing is a toughy. His generation had a nickname for everyone and black people were in a large minority and so their colour was the obvious target for the ridicule. Nicknames are often a term of endearment, sometimes a term of ridicule. As you say, his behaviour is borne from ignorance and I doubt being educated to the fact would change it. FWIW I don't think for one minute that there is any hatred in what he says which just makes him ignorant. In today's society any racism is unacceptable but it's difficult to educate an ignorant person who has lived the majority of their life being ignorant. He obviously isn't prejudiced against black players though.

John Terry is the captain of the English National Team ... says as much about England as it does about Terry

This needs to be made into a banner for the match in a few weeks
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

For instance when watching a match at home and a black player fouls a Liverpool player he will automatically call them a black c*** which imo is wrong and uncalled for.

He does it about people of middle eastern origin too, for instance he calls them all p****. Prime example being the Man Utd fans who sit by the dugout at OT, I explained they're Sikh not P**** and that he's simply stereotyping one group of people or race. He did it a few hours ago too when talking about an asian taxi driver who was driving his mate home in Leeds. He referred to him as a P****.

I constantly have to pull him up on this and tell him he can't say things like that but he just ignores me and continues to do it anyway.

I don't think he's a racist as such I think it just stems from anger and the immediate thing you can think of when angry is either to target someone's weight or someone's colour but either way it's not right. He's obviously still stuck back in the dark ages with regards to his views of other races and religions.

He calls fat people fat c**** too when infact he is overweight himself it's just the way he is. I'm not defending him here btw and I hope I haven't offended anyone.

I admire your honesty mate, but your brother is a racist.

He'll say it to the wrong person one day too and land himself in a spot of bother.

Strange isn't it that Suarez is already branded a racist by the media and in the Terry case then it is Ferdinand that is being blamed for accusing him.

O no, Terry can't be guilty can he Poor poor Terry

The media seems to defend Terry 100%. They come up with all sort of excuses.

Personally I have less of an issue with people using the phrase 'x cunt' where x is a variable that the recipient has control over, e.g. You Audi driving cunt, or you athiest cunt, or you manc loving cunt. But where x is something outside of their control then that is a different matter and are pretty equivalent, be it black, welsh, tall, female, ginger (I suppose they could dye it).
That's a good distinction, certainly as a guideline for 'good practice' in the use of insults and banter.

I'm not at all sure of that. You think he represses the urge to say similar things to Cole, Malouda and Drogba etc? I think he wanted to be aggressive and draw a response from an opponent in a horrible, unsophisticated way.

I haven't had a lot of experience with racism, growing up in Mid Wales is hardly cosmopolitan. When it does happen it's usually more certain with the use of clearly racist terms. It happened a bit in school and i'd always make a stand against it and took a few whacks doing so. Perhaps it's my somewhat sheltered and idealised personal view that fails to see the racism (predjudice or race based hatred) in the term black.

PS: e.g. If Evra is right and Suarez was whispering the N-bomb to him during the game, that would IMO be a far worse offence

How would you feel if someone walked up to you and your missus in the supermarket and called your wife a "****ing black cunt"? You honestly wouldn't feel he was being racist?
