Surely Benfica will beat Galati in Lisbon Which would leave the mancs 2nd at best and in line to face Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich etc

Cant agree with that. Basle have a massive motivation to beat them. I wouldn't put money on them, but i certainley wouldn't rule them out.
