First he's wrong - as Paul S. says, people who talk about suicide have been known to commit suicide. Second, he's being dismissive of people who talk about suicide. It's not exactly the approach taken by the Samaritans. In fact, it's a hell of a lot closer to those who egg on people to jump.

Although he was clearly being offensive well before that more naked display.
Well done for rewriting what I actually wrote. Nice work.

I think this is what's hit people the hardest about it all, how they'd watched him on Saturday, and then how something so cataclysmic could happen overnight which would cause him to end his own life.

You're well out of order here.

What institution? I know someone considering a postgrad in Law and it would be helpful to whittle down the list of options by knowing which to avoid.

        I tend to agree.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

ANYWAY, lets draw a line under this lads, this is neither the time or the place.

Can any Suicide discussion now take place in this thread -

If anyone carries on with the above argument, they can spend a week in the bin. Final warning.

Back on topic, looks like the tabloid 'rumours' have died down today, unless there is an injunction of some kind.

Let's hope it was just idle speculation.
              Oh I don't know.

something big must of being playing on his mind to choose the route he did, in time the reasons may come out, right now its right to concentrate on the good memories.

away from speed and generally talking, the gutter press may be just that, but if you haven't done something wrong, you normally don't get exposed. the unveiling of giggs as a grade a c**t, was 100% deserved. I'm all for exposing charlatans. but there's ways of doing it.

I still can't get my head round this though.

purely speculation on my part here so no offence intended - but lets say there was some sort of story that was due to break, that has caused Gary Speed to take his own life - I'd imagine anyoen involved with that story (paper/journo/source) would be feeling pretty damn low at the moment and going to ground with the info.
Given the shock of it all, and how popular Gary Speed is with virtually everyone could you imagine what would happen to the paper if they ran that story so soon

The story is probably toxic in the wake of his death and not worth pursuing, there was a documentary on tv a few years ago about Diana, and there was a paparazzi talking about a photo of her inside the car, how all the newspapers were getting excited, and how at the time bidding for the picture was going through the roof, and that at the time it was the most valuable picture in the world. Then she died and it became worthless. He looked upset when he said that.

I doubt very much whether we'll find out if the gutter press had a story ready to be published. As Paul mentioned it'd do the newspaper more harm than good now.....they don't want to damage their own character/reputation by doing so.

It is, i suppose, possible that he left a note but i'm not sure we'll ever know the truth unless his wife wants to get back at the paper involved, if true of course. I'm pretty sure the family said they'd be releasing a statement in the next few days.

If one good thing can come from Gary's tragic death (if it was due to depression) is that people have a greater understanding of it and people, especially men, will seek treatment before it overwhelms them. I'm sure i read somewhere that suicide is the biggest killer of men between 16-35.

Apologies if that last paragraph is in the wrong thread, it's just quite hard to separate the two issues.

I've now heard a second rumour, far less malicious than the previously speculated story that was to be broken. The latest is more of a story than a 'scandal' but still a completely futile reason to do something so drastic.

The press is this country may not be nice, but they can't be stupid enough that they would use the story given what has happened... Can they?

No truth in the story that The Daily Star were investigating Gary Speed in any way.

I think with a suicide there has to be a coroner's inquest which in England and Wales is public and can be reported on. If there is a note or records of press contacts that the police have been aware of they'll become a matter of public record. Sadly the process is fairly intrusive for the family.
